Best by far on black. A friend and I went up to the lighthouse park in Newport to shoot the newly fledged peregrine falcons. They were just sitting there ho hum so we went to the end of the spit by the light house and there was a gray whale who had come in VERY close to feed. I’ve never seen a whale so close. At times he was too close for the 150mm end of my zoom! What a huge thrill. A peak experience. One of the most awesome experiences of my life. I took about 400 shots but this one with him so close to the rocks and visible from head to tail fin was my favorite. You can even see his eye if you view large.
Thanks for your visits, comments, suggestions, favs
That certainly must have made your summer! What a fabulous experience to get to watch - and to have a camera (now that part is not unusual for a 365'er - granted) right handy - I can see where you'd get a million shots - this one is incredible against black. I can't imagine being that close in. Big Fav
@robz around here people hire boats to take them out for whale watching! Or you can see them way out from shore when they are migrating. I’m guessing this is one of the whales that tends to stay near Newport but I’ve been to the lighthouse probably 100 times and never seen one even close before. I’m still vibrating with excitement! @pamknowler@elkereturns@golftragic@milaniet@dkbarnett@busylady@happypat@4rky@fayefaye
What an experience! And this capture, with the color tones of the water, and the full length of the whale is amazing -- head and tail visible!! Very very special.
Awesome Jane!!!! I can just hear your excitement! I'm so happy you got to experience this truly amazing and perhaps a once in a life time event (although, I hope you get to see it again) Thanks for sharing, and I hope you post more.
@jgpittenger Your whale watching sound wonderful - no wonder you were so excited when he stayed around so long. The ones further out sound like the whales which migrate up and down our Eastern Coast. I thought you might like the link below - it relates to a white whale that has been seen migrating for many years - his name is Migaloo and he is quite famous. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-07-02/baby-albino-whale-spotted-off-lennox-head/9931622
What a great experience. We saw Orcas last year while we were kayaking and they were probably 50 ft. away from us. I know the excitement you are feeling. Its so amazing.
Great shot :)
Clearly deserves a fav!
