Use and toss by joysabin

Use and toss

I was asked by the thrift store where I volunteer to assess the condition of a box of camera goodies. Inside I found several point-n-shoots without chargers. I don't know if they work or not. It is a shame that many think of thrift stores as a place to leave unwanted old things that may still be viable.

I've recommended that they offer them for sale as they still have batteries and memory cards but at basically give-away prices or a while to see if they might find a new home. If not, then off to the recycle facility.

PS- I am practicing for next month's Nifty Fifty SOOC challenge. I've decided to start with SOOC as I just used my kit lenses and forgot to pay attention to the focal length- I guess one step at a time....

Nice photo, with the side light and reflections. You gave them good advice, I think. I am a sucker for old point-and-shoot film cameras, but when I'm checking them out there are often people looking for a little digital to try. My most recent prize, a Pentax IQZoom, had an unusually sharp lens but bit the dust, literally, when I dropped it.

@eudora Thank you and very cool find. I did find 4 digital P&S's that worked- so that's good. I also found several filters, a couple of lenses-manual- exact mount undetermined. I found a couple of P&S film cameras, an Olympus stylus epic which I am going to get a new battery and give it a whirl.

I like the photo, and agree with your suggestion to provide the cameras at "give away" prices. Put 'em to use, or move them to recycling... Maybe some young person will be inspired!

@lsquared Who knows, maybe a student of photography from the local university.

love the reflections and lighting here. I have an old canon Powershot that I used at my daughter's wedding 12 years ago. But I can't find the battery charger for it. and, haha, I was thinking of giving it to the thrift store!

It seems such a waste - is it at all possible to gt new battery cahrgers - maybe even old ones from E Bay?

I like this-- would be great if they did work.

If they don't sell maybe give them to a school and see if any of the school children would be interested in taking photos.

You gave them good advice- and if they don't sell, I'd agree with trying to find them a home with someone who wouldn't normally be able to buy a camera- like a child. I'm pretty sure you'd still be able to find a charging cable for the Sony. I'm not familiar with the middle camera, possibly the Casio. I can't see what the three in the back are. When I needed a cable to upload pics from my camera to my laptop my camera shop had a pile of cables to go through and we found one. So I'm thinking that if there is a camera store nearby whoever buys the camera might be able to find what they need there.

Oh gosh, I hear you loud 'n clear. Hope you find some good homes for these cameras. At give-away prices people may well be able to afford to buy some of the missing bits online.

Someone will find one of them useful so hooray for thrift stores especially if there is some life left in the cameras.

Memories! I loved my Sony Cybershot but it was dropped. Always wanted to find another and see if I could fix it and let a grandchild use it.

who knows, they might make it to a museum, cameras are evolving very fast indeed
great shot and lighting

@jernst1779 Thank you so much for the fav. Our town recycles electronics of all kinds. I wish that things were made to last and used same style of parts or chargers from model to model. We just live with such a throw away mentality.

@robz It is, I found one for the sony on amazon and ebay. I worry that if a new charger might not be the answer since the hardware itself might be not working. I think the real problem is that cell phones now take very good images and you don't have to have another thing with you.

@samae Thank you. It would be, wouldn't it?

@onewing That's a real good idea.

@olivetreeann Improvements in cell phone cameras have made a big impact too. I do like the idea of donating to a school, I'll mention that to the staff.

@golftragic Finding homes is a good idea but we photogs have a special spot for cameras in general don't we?

@lostphojo I think that cell phone's have taken over for these babies. I can't say anything since I use mine. I don't leave pictures on it like some people though.

@genealogygenie I have an old cybershot old enough that it looks like a DSLR. I still use it now and then but, cameras became not needed once cell phones could take pictures.

@ninaganci I remember visiting the Museum of American History at the Smithsonian about 10 years ago and I saw a bike helmet like the first one I owned and a Franklin Planner that I still use there. I felt sooo old. Getting old hits at the least appropriate of times.

True - I'm the only one in our family who actually uses a camera! :)
