In the absence of a fast life I decided I had no excuse not to do the Big Garden Bird Watch this year. You have to log the birds over an hour and the hour started quite precipitously when this Greater Spotted Woodpecker appeared. He was around last summer and sadly took a clutch of Great tits from the bird box which I’ll have to protect this season. In the meantime he’s welcome to the suet.
Weather: perishing
Covid: circular walks from the front door...
Good things: zoom calls with friends we wouldn’t see even if there weren’t a lock down.
I so many to do a bird count this year but never got round to registering...I presume you have to do that? Too late now but I promise I shall next time. I love the woodpecker on your feeder...shame about the Great Tits....nature is a cruel thing sometimes!
What a lovely bird! We have his cousin the Hairy Woodpecker, who has more black and white laddering on his back, a smaller red spot on the back of the head, but no red belly. I have many at my suet and mealworms.
Great start to the bird count with the arrival of this awesome woodpecker. We did the Audubon Backyard Bird Count a couple of years ago. It's a good way to brush up on bird species. I keep forgetting to register for the count since then. Note to self: register for next year
Love these birds! We also had a birdwatch this weekend, but you only had to watch for half an hour. And I would have jumped for joy if I saw this one in my garden
