In January I got sucked into the dahlia section of the Sarah Raven catalogue, bought 5 new varieties and they’ve all been lovely but this one is my favourite. I’m featuring the upturned, straw-filled plantpot which is supposed to catch earwigs because it seems to have worked for Penny Lane - not so much for some of the others which have been particularly chewed this year for some reason. Ah well - got to encourage insects!!
Weather (sort of): nights are drawing in.
Covid: steady/downwards
Good thing: good visit from the wardrobe fitter, new plug sockets ordered, decorating scheme sorted - not our usual style!
What a beauty! I gave up on dahlias as our climate is too cold and I had to dig them up and store them, and it never worked well. So I am enjoying yours!
@bkp@happypat my dad used to store dahlias very successfully but I was left with dust when I tried! I leave these in the pots and try to find room in the greenhouse (though that tends to get filled with geraniums now). I cover them with wool stuff that comes with meal kits like Hello Fresh if frost is due. There is a bit of an attrition rate year on year but it’s nice to ring the changes a bit and buy a few new ones anyway. I discovered that the amazing Anglesey Abbey dahlias are all sunk into the soil inside pots so I thought if pots are good enough for them…. This year I have cut off parts of the sprouting tubers and made more plants that will definitely stay inside over winter and I’ll put them in big pots next year. I don’t think @bkp stands a chance of getting them through a Schenectady winter without lifting them though sadly.
