Right across the river from the goose shot this lady was testing the temperature of the water. I grabbed a quick shot (wish I'd got more reflection) before she spotted me. I'm not sure about posting this - is it too personal? I'll delete it if you think it's wrong. I think she looks great in the red swimsuit. River swimming seems to be increasingly popular - there's always been a naturist swimming club on the river at Newnham - but I've never seen anybody swimming at this spot. Personally I'd worry too much about Weil's disease which has even found its way into the neighbouring paddling pool.
She looks great in that red bathing suit and the shot of her is so sweet - I'd definitely keep it! I really like the mood of this, it has something calming.
@jannaellen Calming is right - it was idyllic down there - if you go through the playground at Newnham and go to the far left corner of the carpark there's a lovely walk through to Newnham - this was taken on the little bridge heading towards the Botanic Garden (divert left after the paddling pool!).
Lovely photo. I understand your hesitation about posting, but we have to work up the courage to post life as we see it (I say "we" because I'm a coward of taking/posting people). She was in a public place, she's clothed appropriately, and it's a lovely photo of her, not one she should be ashamed of at all.
@snowy I didn't see her in the water (I'd run off embarrassed) and I'm surprised the geese let her in but I hope she got her dip and didn't swallow any water!
Judith you are OK posting pictures of people in public places...it is not illegal to do so...unless you were trespasing on private property to take this picture !
I've posted 'people / street photography' scenes before on here and I understand the concerns about privacy. We had a big long thread on 365 a few weeks ago, which caused quite a bit of emotion !
The picture is really good, it has a gentle feel to it and the reflections are lovely. It might work also as a B/W with 'colour popped / selective colouring' on the lady. As for the lady in the picture , if I waked past her in the street I would not know she was from your picture, as she is not easy to identify from your picture :)
As for swimming in a River..no way...(1) for the health reasons you state and (2) our local river ...The Trent is really dangerous as it has strong currents and several ppl a year end up drowning in the summer because they do not listen to advice from the Police !!
I agree with Phil and the others. I think it's absolutely fine to post photos from public places. I post them all the time. The only question i ask myself is whether I'm contributing to negative stereotypes of people, or exploiting people in a particular way. I think she looks lovely in her red bathing suit, and you captured a really contemplative moment. I also think the reflection is great. Awesome shot!
I would have loved to have taken this lovely photo . I agree with Phil it has that genteel feel to it. I am always worried about taking pictures of people in case they feel I am intruding so consequently rush photos in case they catch me.
Such a thoughtful reflective lady , reflected in the slow moving river.. She looks like she goes in often, don't know why.
AS children we swam in the river Rhine and Ruhr .. two of wth most heavily polluted rivers in Europe ( or used to be ) Ignorance is bliss and we seem to have all survived.
@june I've been thrown in the Cam after coxing races to no ill effect but the boatman used to say, 'Keep your mouth shut or you'll get Cam fever!' The local girls' school used to have it's own pontoon for swimming lessons (bet they were torture in a knitted swimsuit!) and kids jump in from rope swings all the time - I think you probably can build up immunity but where she's swimming has so much goose poo it realy wouldn't be my top choice of spot!
Yes nice reflective scene. Love to see candid people shots. Love a bit of natural swimming - but mainly the sea - we did dive into a rivery thing in Bristol one year when it was the hottest day of the century or something - I wasn't too worried.
