We're off to visit universities this week for entry in 2012. How did that happen - I'm sure last week I was looking at nurseries. Hoping my beautiful daughter doesn't make me delete - I don't do many portraits - I don't really know what I'm doing - suggestions for improvement welcome.
Many, many thanks for your comments and Faves recently - I am very still truly amazed that people take notice of my pics and take the time to comment.
Very nice! No suggestion really, I leave it to better specialists, but for me the light is good, I like the exposure and contrasts, softness on the face. I also like the look to the left. Perhaps less centering on the eyes?
@scatcat Thanks very much - I hadn't really thought about where the eyes are - I keep feeling perhaps the whole frame should move down a bit - that would move the eyes up & may solve it.
What a beautiful girl! I am no expert so I tend not to give suggestions, but after reading what Muse said about moving the frame...I tend to agree with her. To me this is a portrait of a very lovely young woman with beautiful facial features! I say well done!
A beautifully shaped face & I think you couldn't improve on this. If you came lower down with the shot you would miss that highlight on the face. You must be a very proud Mum. Exciting & tiring time looking at uni's, our family doing the same this year !
What a beautiful heart-shaped face. Think this is nicely done - like the light on the hair and the overall tone giving it a bit of an ethereal quality.
Very, very beautiful! Rachel looks so gorgeous and I love her eyes. She really is a natural beauty. I wouldn't change a thing. Of course, selective colour on the eyes would be tempting but I don't know if it wouldn't destroy the simplicity of this portrait. Thanks again for the lovely walk earlier!
She is beautiful, and this is a wonderful potrait. You should do more of them.
She is only 16 and going to Uni? Is that the usual age, it is around 18 here.
Judith, I never feel comfortable on 365 when commenting on portrait pictures , especially when they are family members of the photographer.
However you've done a great image of your daughter and I bet all your family really like it. It's the back lighting that makes this portrait really good . The high key background really draws you into the face and eyes.
Composition and position of the eyes is spot on for me.
I hope you have got plenty of savings to help her through uni'. Both my daughters were at uni' at the same time (one did 3 years + 1 PGCE year and the other a 3 year course)...so we had 3 years when they were both at uni' together...different uni's !!! LOL it was an expensive time for us and so complicated logistically too ....one year they both started uni on the same day so we had one of us went south down the M1 loaded with pots, pans, laptops and clothes etc and one headed north up the M1 with a similar set of equipment !! Happy times...GOOD LUCK :)
@phil_howcroft Thanks for the nice comments Phil! We thought we had it organised with kids 3 school years apart but what with Masters degrees and 5 year courses in the offing we are planning for about 8 years of famine! And then there's always the chance they won't get jobs and will come home again...blimey... I'm thinking my sister and I overlapped by a year - she was in digs for the 2nd and 3rd years so perhaps could leave some stuff in her room - but there were still the essentials - posters, coffee machine, potted plants and an awful lot of laundry to cart back and forth!
@judithg ha ha Judith, the financial burden is not too bad, I am probably exaggerating a little , it's two years since they both graduated, so I'm not too sure how things have changed financially. It used to wind my daughters up that parents were 'means tested' and they got no financial help from the government whereas some of their friends got great financial help.
It's the hidden costs that you don't realise..tv licences, insurance, broadband, safety deposits , food rations ! laptop breakdowns ! .
both my daughters had student jobs at ASDA throughout uni' .......in term time and outside of term time...ASDA used to arrange transfer to a store in the respective uni city when it was term time and work locally in the holidays...get Rachel on the tills when she is old enough !!
@phil_howcroft OMG - we've had the 'Finance Booklet' - that puts costs at £17K + per year... I'm off to work the Asda tills myself. She'd better do a lot of punt tours.
This is a beautiful portrait. I can't think of any suggestions as it is wonderful. It's funny to think Rachel will be 16 one day. And that day will come sooner than I think.
