My friends moved on to the waterfront in Annapolis three and a half years ago and one of the first things they did was build an osprey platform. Since then they have been the brunt of jokes from the tour boats that pass up and down. But no longer - a young male is building a nest - rather slowly it has to be said but once it is up and running and he (hopefully) finds a mate it will be added to year on year. And in fact they are going to build another platform in collaboration with the neighbours as osprey are communal animals. It's a rather pretty(not to mention expensive) area - really rather a des res!
How interesting to read about this. I had no idea that males built a nest and then found a mate! Great collage, especially the shot of the osprey in flight. It's also good to contextualise with the US flag in there.
Oh am so envious of your visit, looks glorious & your collage is so atmospheric, I can almost feel I am there. Good for your friends...true nature lovers indeed. Cathy asked me to go to NY with her next November.....the way she put it was before I got too old to walk fast......she is right though! Of course I jumped at it!
Good for your friends! We have lots of platforms in this area and it has helped bring back the once dangerously low osprey populations. I especially love the shot of the osprey about to land - very dramatic, great timing!
@mccarth1 Female (and another male competitor) arrived today - apparently my friend has been out canvassing the neighbours about erecting another platform!
