Well let's grow up and start using knives and forks and some examples used for what I have called posh nosh. As I said with the spoons, cutlery comes in all shapes and uses. I particularly like these finely engraved silver ones. The three earlier ones had bone handles but then changed to Mother-of-Pearl around 1900.
Left to Right:
Spreading/Butter Knife (London) 1808
Spreading/Butter Knife (Sheffield) 1865
Fish Knife (Sheffield) 1882
Butter Knife (Birmingham) 1902
Dessert Fork (Sheffield) 1894 Lovely engraving.
Beaded Fork (London) 1869 Beaded edging.
When the weather improves I hope to get back out with my camera, in the meantime I'm trying to bore you with a view of cutlery used in the period of Downton Abbey. View with the black background.
Gorgeous and so well captured. The butter knives are my favorites. Since it's almost time for the new Downton season here in the states, I must fav this lovely capture!
I stood a stall at a local Christmas fair and next to me were a couple called Sliver Splendor who make fabulous rings, pendants and cuff bracelets from old silver cutlery; they had such a passion https://www.facebook.com/pages/Silver-Splendore/230697373721167
These look beautiful and beautifully presented. I have a drawer full of old silver given to me by my Mother and Mother in Law. Sadly we prefer to use the stuff that goes in the dishwasher!
