Church Tower with Family Memories by ladymagpie

Church Tower with Family Memories

This is the tower of St Cyrs. Parish Church in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, the town I moved to as a 4 year old way back in the 50's. It holds so many memories as the family grow up, including being made to go to church every Sunday morning in our best clothes, what got me was my parents never went

My Father was very strict, being from the early Edwardian period, and after church we weren't allowed out of the house or garden for the rest of the day. Both my Sister and Brother were married here and I had my confirmation service held here as well. Don't know how I managed it, but I remember ringing the church bell before the morning service and also being in the church choir.

How times have changed 60+ years later, my Mother always said I was a little devil, I think she was probably right. Best viewed with the black background
This is glorious capture, so much detail. Fav

What a lovely structure. We had a stone house in Thornbury called The Hackett that was in the family for about 400 years. Then the relatives that owned it fell on hard times and had to sell it. Old structures like The Hackett and this old church hold so much history - even for families.

Lovely composition and a Fav. I too was made to go to church and not allowed out to play on Sundays but I had to go to church 3 times on Sunday - first to the morning service, then to Sunday School in the afternoon and then to the evening service. It does seem draconian by today's standards

By the way, I don't go to church at all now - what a surprise! However, I do believe that you can be a good person and help people without having to go to church to prove that you are a good person! Oh I do go for weddings, christenings and funerals (more of the latter lately though)

Stunning Church. It doesn't look any worse having weathered the Heather Demon. I always had to go to Sunday school and my Parents never went to church either. Guess it didn't do me any harm.
