In today's modern shopping it's surprising what you can find in a supermarket. There are pepper mills, sea salt mills and here we have an old Cotswold Mill. In the car park of my local supermarket.
In 1849, Kimmins Mill was constructed to mill flour but ceased milling in 1935. It was used as a storage facility including textile machinery and has now become the Stroud Mills Heritage center. Look closely at the side of the building and you will see a red brick arch where the waterwheel once was, and on the right there are doors where the sacks of corn and flour were hoisted in and out.
On the other side of the mill is a couple of old cottages and when the supermarket was built in 1996-97 the company tried to get an old couple out so they could pull them down. They refused to be moved and after several court cases and many large offerings of money, the supermarket had to give in and leave them to live their lives in their own home, unfortunately they are surrounded with traffic and roads but GOOD FOR THEM for stick by what they wanted.
A great historical capture - love to hear that the owners stood their ground. I'm always sad to see homes torn down in the name of "progress". Hope you are feeling much better!
