Well this is not my usual capture for the 365 Project, but I was told of this gravestone yesterday but the lady didn't know the mans name and only that he was at rest somewhere in the center of the graveyard in a nearby village.
A challenge I thought, and off I went to find a "Wot no grave" in a churchyard. After a short search I found it and here lies George Edward Chatterton, cartoonist and creator of CHAD.
It turns out his nickname was CHAT which became CHAD, the famous character during WW11. In America it was known as KILROY, and in Australia it was FOO. It was often used due the shortage of food during the war, hence someone would say, WOT, No meat.
Glad to see his cartoon lives on on the gravestone and as he's passed away it says, "WOT NO CHAT".
Kudos to you for finding this so quickly, but then you have great sleuthing abilities. I've often searched long and hard for my ancestors' elusive stones. You might consider becoming a Find A Grave volunteer!
Well done finding it and discovering where it was in the first place. I had no idea he lived in this area. Being a person of a certain age I remember his work well. We used to doodle the face and write messages under it as children.
