If you live in my area you either live on top of the hills or on the lower slopes. In the old days the valley bottoms were reserved for the mills and factories that feed off the rivers running along them and the workers would walk down to them.
This is the village of North Woodchester and as you can see it is spread around the church which was the heart of each village. There are many villages like this and today usually remains a shop, a pub and community hall. View with the dark background.
