A Memorial Day dedication to the memory of my papaw. Wearing his WWI uniform here, I have no idea where this very old sepia-tone photo was made. I borrowed it from my mom to scan.
He was in France for a long time during the war and served in the Army Cavalry. When they found out he knew how to handle horses in basic training, (yes, they still used horses in WWI) that's where he was assigned active duty. It was his job to bring the fresh horses to the officers on the battlefield. Through flying bullets and artillery fire, he'd bring them in and take the tired ones back out.
He was the only son of a Western NC farmer, born in the middle of seven sisters. He would jokingly tell me all those sisters made him mean. LOL! He married my grandmother a few years after returning from Europe. She never would've married a mean man. They were a salt of the earth pair and still very much loved and missed.
@phil_howcroft It's possible! But we already have a link to merry old England with my father's ancestors and Bagley (but old English spelling of Baguley and Baggiley) Hall. You spelled it for me before. Remember?
