I've seen a few Remembrance Day pictures on 365 so I thought I should do something too.........I didn't really know what to do for my 11 th hour of the 11 th day of the 11th month.
I decided to post an image from the 'Howcroft Archive' of my Granddad.
He was in the Somme and trenches of France. He told me he and his mate were guarding a post and they got bombed by some mustard gas. His mate died but my grandfather survived. He told me two German soldiers found him and carried him to a British Military Hospital ....such was the camaraderie in the trenches.
Anyway he was returned to Lancashire were my Grandma nursed him better.
So that's my Remembrance Day image.
Here he is in army uniform.
I inherited his 'Howcroft nose' ...oh and his good looks :)
Lovely Phil & a very special photo of your Grandad, you must be very proud !!! Actually the little I have seen of you shows there is definitely a likeness !!
Great rememberence shot Phil - what a great looking guy - and great story. I remembered my great great uncle today - he had his leg blown off in the first war - I remember as a kid his wooden leg Horace! My Grandad survived the trenches in Holland with only a bullet through his shoulder. Amazing men, all of them who fought for our independence...
Nice pic Phil.. He was a lucky man.! Being half german, I've a few of these old photos in varying uniforms.. In fact, my nan was awarded an iron cross would you believe!
Great shot Phil - there's a real family resemblance. That gas was evil - my great grandad had shrapnel removed 60 years after it got in him. Remarkable people & none of them talked about it which speaks volumes...
great portrait to show for today.
i was parked up at 10.59 and sat in my van for the silence. its amazing having that silent remembrance, powerful stuff.
What a wonderful portrait and story. A fav for sure. Today I read to my 4th graders a book about the writing of the poem "In Flanders Field" WWI is very unfamiliar to my students. They know the American wars, of course, and they may have grandfathers who served in Viet Nam, or other relatives as far back as WWII, but The Great War means nothing to them. I like the name Remembrance Day. In the U.S. it is called Veterans' Day.
