A few of you may remember my first memorable encounter with a caterpillar for 365: http://365project.org/myautofocuslife/365/2012-04-26 Well, here's another one that's just as big and chubby and spiky! View the larger version for details if you don't find it too freaky. 8)
It's actually the caterpillar of the atlas moth, which is a tropical moth found only in Southeast Asia. The atlas moth is the largest in the world in terms of wing surface area (not wing span). Its wings are indeed spectacular: http://www.factzoo.com/insects/atlas-moth-worlds-largest-moth-never-eats.html The upper wing tips look like snake heads!
I've never seen an atlas moth despite having lived here all my life. But now that I've seen the caterpillars, I hope I get to see the moth some day.
Actually, I think that he's pretty handsome now too! Gorgeous detail and color markings. Would love to see the transformation and hope that you catch the moth!
He certainly does look a little weird. i think it would be wonderful if you were able to find an atlas moth so we could all experience one! And without having to rely on Google :-)
I think this is the first time I've seen one of your bugs and thought urrrgghh! But it's the bug that makes me think that not your photo, which as always is fantastic. Hope you see the moth soon :)
Another awesome macro shot Livia, this fella is looking pretty creepy. I have been looking for bugs and can never seem to find any, they only come around me when i don't want them too lol
ew ew ew ew, bring back the spiders! (wow, that is a statement I NEVER EVER thought I'd say). Amazing detail and interesting facts, you have a great eye and great skills, but ew.
Very cool shot! Great focus & detail. I hope you get to see him as a moth! I looked at the link and he will be amazing! Thank you for the info, too. Very interesting and informative!
A great, big, not-so-freaky, chubby and determined "THANK YOU!" to all! I hope to see an atlas moth too. It amazes me to think about how one of these caterpillars will metamorphosize into a visually stunning moth. Thank you so much for your encouraging comments. I appreciate them, and I am grateful for your support!
Great capture. We have atlas moths at the zoo in the butterfly room. They are huge. What kind of camera do you use? It does not show in the information.
