First thing that popped into my head when I saw this? "Whoa. Zombie plants would love this." Doesn't it look like a big plant brain? XD
It was huge, about the size of my head. This is the side view of an unopened flower of the Giant Dutchman's Pipe. You can google for pictures of the flower to see what it's like when it's fully opened. It's quite spectacular. It is also known as the Pelican Flower because, in this yet-to-open state, it is said to resemble the throat of a pelican.
I don't know. I still see brains. 8D
Reminder: Next week will be another Jumping Spiders Week. Feel free to un-follow if spiders aren't your thing. Shots from the last Jumping Spiders Week in July: http://365project.org/tags/jumping%20spiders%20week
Great shot. And I never heard of it so will have to google.
Brains? You see brains?
I did a photo class once with a horticulturist and he showed me plant ovaries......
This is one of the most unique collages I've seen (in a positive unique way)! Very, creative. I see it as brains, now that you told me - I've seen too many sci-fi shows to not get that. Jumping spiders, oh that would just freak me out to take shots of them - do they ever lunge at you??? But now I will have to take a moment to look at some - no danger on my part!
@myhrhelper Yes, sometimes they do. The braver ones are very curious and jump on to my lens. But a jumping spider is really tiny, only around 5mm (0.19in), and when I blow at it, it will jump off my lens again. The shy ones don't even want their picture taken and I have to chase them. XD I don't think I'm being brave. I just find them really cute. 8)
Never heard of the plant, but you have done an incredible collage. I don't think 1 view of this would have been enough. Hoping you go back and get a shot when it blooms.
Awesome find and stunting capture Great collage. Never seen something like this. Have you been to: ``The little shop of horror`` and found this plant in that shop ?. How did he get the name Giant Dutchman pipe ?
Yep, I see brains, too. Great collage. We have these growing here, also. They are a declared weed because they poison the larvae of native butterflies when they hatch and have caused some of them to become endangered. Fav. for me.
@pyrrhula From the wiki, it says, "The common names "Dutchman's pipe" and "pipevine" are an allusion to old-fashioned meerschaum pipes at one time common in the Netherlands and Northern Germany." Some species of this plant do look a lot more like pipes than the one I've shot. 8)
That is definitely a strange looking plant! And I can't believe how big it is. Great job on the collage. It really gives you the whole picture. Yes a brain, a pelican's throat, even someone's innerds, but hardly a plant!
@summerfield They are of the genus Aristolochia, the same type of vine plant, just different species. It's sometimes also called birthwort, because the shape of the flower resembles a birth canal.
A great, big, surprising, well-veined and kinda brainy "THANK YOU!" to everyone for stopping by! I'm glad you've enjoyed seeing my little discovery. It was my first encounter with the Giant Dutchman's Pipe, I was really excited to see it. Still looks like a big plant brain to me.
Thank you so much for your generous support. Please know that I appreciate it very much.

You are so brave!

Thank you so much for your generous support. Please know that I appreciate it very much.
