The dragon boat race is spaced out. With the race taking about 30 minutes and the crews going off about every three minutes there is often no boat nearby to keep the pace. So crews out on their own have a hard psychological race to keep working at full pace.

I guess this is where the drummer's and cox's (?) abilities are so crucial. Don't know about the cox (?) but I do know that maintaining a steady drum beat is no sinecure, and must be extraordinarily difficult in these circumstances.
