The dragon boat race is spaced out. With the race taking about 30 minutes and the crews going off about every three minutes there is often no boat nearby to keep the pace. So crews out on their own have a hard psychological race to keep working at full pace.
Here you see one of the top crews working hard back up-stream to the clubhouse. This is taken from Henley Bridge, the crew have only a quarter of the distance to go.

I guess this is where the drummer's and cox's (?) abilities are so crucial. Don't know about the cox (?) but I do know that maintaining a steady drum beat is no sinecure, and must be extraordinarily difficult in these circumstances.
