This tree saddened me because it was obviously a magnificent tree at one time. Now it is all but emasculated with age and having been lopped. A sad little pile of rotting logs lies at the foot of its trunk. A victim of the modern obsession with health and safety maybe?.

Excellent composition...........good depiction of our blitheringly stupid need to control things - even Nature. As a true tree-lover, I think this sad. What really scalds me is when people (usually landlords) demolish a healthy, magnificent old tree that's been there for over a century, because it's a "liability." But this tree here doesn't look lke it's in a place where it could do anyone any harm........what gives?? Have a great week Damon, Les
Great capture, net . . but I agree with you. This is very sad, indeed. They may as well have cut the whole thing down. It'll never grow back to it's full glory.
it may be to try and keep it alive - some of our more interesting trees, the ones with faces were pollarded like this - as the wood was farmed - cropped at a certain size to get chair struts or other things - this tree looks as if has been pollarded previously. The other joy of pollarding is that it provides holes for bats and birds
@sarasdadandmom you can tell tree age approximately by measuring the girth - approximately 1m at 150cm high iirc per 100 years - if it takes more than four people to hug it it's in the ancient tree listings, That tree doesn't look much more than 100-150 years old to my eye (and I have surveyed trees locally)
Two things resonate here: One, all I can think of is Shel Siverstein's "The Giving Tree."
2, do you see the sad face? To the left, near the bottom. @sabresun
@aj1268 I do. Large nose, weak chin and maybe a hat pulled down over the eyes? Quite sad really.
Apart from losing its major branches, there still seems to be plenty of life left in the tree judging by the offshoots. It is very sad to look upon. I'd be interested in seeing another shot of the same tree when its in leaf come the spring.
@netkonnexion Would you mind doing me a favour and adding the tag woodcreatures. You can see the collection here http://365project.org/tags/woodcreatures This shot would be a good addition to the ones already collected by myself and a few other 365ers if you would add it. Many thanks.
A very sad and wonderful shot of this old tree. Do you know if it's an oak? There's one legend or myth that Merlin was trapped in an oak tree by Morgana. I just love old oaks and old trees of any sort, actually!
