The challenge yesterday proved much more difficult. I admit it was really blurred and there was a misleading red colour reflected on it. So I was beginning to think no-one was going to get it and I might have to give a clue. Then suddenly someone did get it. Congratulations to Laurie Higgins (@lauriehiggins) who bagged a place in history by spotting that it was a phone charger.
To be more specific it was a car cigarette-lighter adaptor phone-charger. I would have accepted someone picking up that it was a cigarette-lighter adaptor plug.

This looks like a male connector cable for some sort of electronics that is fairly rugged. It is much more than a serial interface, but with that many pins it probably is a higher speed data interface.
