Today the rings are viewed as "a symbol which reinforces the idea that the Olympic Movement is international and welcomes all countries of the world to join" by the International Olympic Committee and athletes alike. The charter states that the symbol "represents the union of the five regions of the world and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games". Before 1951 the colors were assigned to continents: Europe- blue, Yellow- Asia, Black-Africa, Green- Australia and Oceania, and Red for North and South America. But this interpretation was eventually discarded because there was no evidence that Pierre de Coubertin (the designer) ever meant it to be viewed that way. Today, the colors are not assigned to continents, rather the joining of the colored rings represents how all the countries of the world come together at the Games.

Thank you everyone. We'd planned that I should be able to post while in Boston, but in the end we couldn't get the laptop to access the internet- sigh!! So I went into serious 365 withdrawal by Tuesday!! I will slowly visit all your projects in the coming days. I appreciate you patience with me as I catch up with your photos.
