One of the reasons Betsy and Christopher were excited to have me come out when Micah was born was that I'd bring my camera and be able to take pictures for them. I really think their opinion of my photographic skills was a little beyond my capabilities at this point! I have an eye and an imagination but not always the technical know-how or equipment to shoot like the pros. When Isaac was born, friends of theirs who are pros took some wonderful shots and they were hoping I'd be able to do the same. Well... I'm no pro, but I did explain I'd be able to work with natural lighting and some fundamentals of portraiture and produce something they'd cherish. If there was a little bit wrong here and there, I'd probably be able to fix it in post-processing. Then I asked them what the main thing was that they wanted to remember about Micah as a newborn. They wanted to remember how tiny he is. I must say, I'm pleased with a lot of the pictures I took on our photo shoot- but this one (and a couple others) really featured how tiny Micah is. What you see here is Betsy's hand in the foreground, Christopher's underneath hers and Micah's beautiful head resting in them. He really is that tiny!! At first I was bothered that I didn't completely capture his entire head. I was so nervous! And we were trying to get as many shots off before Isaac woke up from his nap. But this shot has actually grown on me in its imperfection because you really do get a sense of how big an adult hand is compared to how tiny Micah is. I love that Betsy and Christopher's hands are holding him together too. It is a beautiful picture of not only a family but how parents really are the foundation of love and support in a child's life.
This is a beautiful picture and not one of those classical baby pictures.. I really like it, partly because i think the little baby's hairy head i so cute :)
beautiful....I didn't have any trouble knowing it was a tiny baby head.....outstanding the way you used both their hands....love the b and w too....this photo is going to be cherished forever!
You have chosen a beautiful way to show their care and love for this darling baby! You must be so proud and pleased that you could take a good photograph!
@coffeemonster Thank you Matilda! I really appreciate that feedback. And yes, he does have the cutest little head! @megmills Thank you so much Meg! Of course Christopher and Betsy were so appreciative- but sometimes I expect the family to say "nice things" so the feedback from my peers is so helpful. @kerristephens Thank you Kerri! So many of the pictures looked good in b/w I had to remind myself to switch over to color every now and then!a @maggiemae Thank you Maggie! I really am. I did a little reading up on portraits before but not as much as I'd hoped to. In the end though, I just tried to pay attention to what was in the background and the way the light was hitting the subject. And it paid off. @eniaral Wow Laraine- that comment went right through me. We are so focused around here on Jeff leaving a musical legacy for the grandkids I never even thought of my pictures as being something I'd leave them! Thank you!
Great shot, Ann! :) I do not see any imperfection in this shot whatsoever. Whatever you see is a figment of your imagination. It's perfect. Well done. I couldn't have come up with something this beautiful, amazing, touching, heartfelt (ummm..running out of words). Great job!
@prttblues Thank you Bev! I began seeing it that way- but now I feel completely different. I like the way I took it and how it came out. Thanks for all the accolades- they are particularly appreciated on this shot! @taffy Thank you Taffy! I hadn't really thought about that aspect until you and Laraine mentioned it- and now it's really mind boggling that someday he might be telling someone, "My grandmother took this shot!"
That's lovely, so precious. I remember when my nephew was born, weighing in prematurely at 2lb, holding my fist next to his head and realising his head was smaller. I did it again minutes later to check .. didn't seem possible but he really was that tiny. Bless little Micah
PERFECT. you captured exactly what they asked for. how wonderfully creative to have both hands cradle their sweet son and such a special moment to remember. he truly is tiny!
I LOVE what you capture here, Ann. it speaks to me of love and trust and how vulnerable this little new born is. a perfect picture..fav..
the parents will be happy and will treasure this moment.
Thank you Timothy, Phil, Yao, Dionne, Rick, Simmy, Jerri, Bruni and Kathryn! Your compliments and appreciation really mean so much to me especially on this shot.
I think you were so smart to ask them what they most wanted from the photo shoot...what they wanted to remember their sweet baby. That helped you get to this wonderful memory for them to always cherish! I love it! I like how it more their hands, and then some of Micah's newborn head...and then way off in the distance you can see suggestion of parents. I think it is great.
@allie912 Thank you Allison! @espyetta Thank you Marybeth! And thank you so much for the fav!

@mrssmith203 Thanks Carla! I've done a book of most of the shots I took, but saved this one for a Christmas gift. I think I will have it printed on a canvas for them.
