My sister had set a few Christmas ornaments aside for me and it seems this Christmas they are especially dear. I remember them on the tree as I was growing up. They were always so pretty with their little spots of glitter. The lights twinkled off them and the whole room seemed magical when only the lights of the tree were lit. Looking at these cherished decorations brought this song to mind:
Precious Memories
Precious mem'ries, unseen angels
Sent from somewhere to my soul
How they linger, ever near me
And the sacred past unfold.
CHORUS:
Precious mem'ries, how they linger
How they ever flood my soul
In the stillness of the midnight
Precious, sacred scenes unfold.
Precious father, loving mother
Fly across the lonely years
And old home scenes of my childhood
In fond memory appear.
In the stillness of the midnight
Echoes from the past I hear
Old-time singing, gladness bringing
From that lovely land somewhere.
I remember mother praying
Father, too, on bended knee
Sun is sinking, shadows falling
But their pray'rs still follow me.
As I travel on life's pathway
Know not what the years may hold
As I ponder, hope grows fonder
Precious mem'ries flood my soul.
Thank you Diane, Kerri, Sally, Terry, Hope, Dione, Nicole and Rick! I so appreciate your faithful comments! I am quite behind on mine, but I will do my best to catch up over the next few days!
They're so pretty these old ornaments and when you hang them on the tree all the wonderful memories coming back to you. loved reading that verse by J.B.F. Wright. thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you Bruni, Kathryn and Carole!
I am sure that this is a particularly spectacular ornament as the tab inside indicates it was made in 1956- the year I was born! lol
This ornament looks like a treasure. What a sweet capture. I'm so grateful for you this Christmas. So glad that you were able to speak with your sisters, too. :)
they don't make decorations like this anymore, something one can treasure and remember in later years. now all we have are glittery baubles that are fleeting and mean next to nothing. i remember having a similar one growing up. if i have one wish this Christmas season is to be able to go back in time and look at precious things like this again. very nice, ann.
That's one of the Christmas traditions I think is very special -- the idea of ornaments being passed down across generations and the wealth of memories they carry for each individual and family. What a good example you've shared.
@gratefulness Thank you Sandi! You are so sweet. I am thankful for you too- it's been a blessing to share my writing with you! @summerfield Thank you Vikki! No, they don't- at least not ones that can be easily found. Vikki you are blessed with a wonderful imagination. You might not physically be able to go back, but your memory can take you there. Wishing you time to see the precious things- in dreams and in your imagination. @taffy Thank you Taffy! It is a special treasure to be sure. One I will be able to pass on to my grandchildren!
What a lovely ornament, Ann! It looks quite old! You've captured it beautifully. I love the tone and color. It tells a story. Older ornaments used to compared to today's. Well done :)
