Shoot Out at PPC by olivetreeann

Shoot Out at PPC

Camera club tonight! The organizers had set up several stations with a variety of photo opps. These two are focusing on the picture to the right- a combination of silk flowers and shells behind a textured piece of glass. It reminded me of water drops on a pane of glass. There were several different pieces that could be interchanged as well as different flowers to shoot. Other options included shooting glycerin drops on mylar and a variety of natural objects (such as a pine cone) in a light tent where you could synchronize your flash with the lights. My little camera held its own but I must confess I prefer natural lighting so the studio set-ups don't really spark my interest.
It must be so wonderful to spend time with like minded folk and learn something new!

How interesting - you must learn lots, and have good discussions.

Studio lighting can be a bit of a challenge, a lot of shooting experiments

Great shot especially for not being into the studio stuff.

Neat! Sounds like a really useful workshop idea though to be able to try out so many different setups. Must steal this idea for our camera club ...

@salza @lleo @kerristephens @digitalrn @daisymiller @jesperani @sgiesman @archaeofrog @summerfield @sangwann @lisatargowska @bkbinthecity

Thank you all! It was a fun evening- did some shooting, chatted with several folks and got to know a few more. Believe it or not, I'm fairly new to this club!

@archaeofrog Go right ahead Katie! It was very well received. I think the station that was the most popular was the mylar & glycerin. One photographer excels in these shots so she was on hand to guide people when they had questions. The light tent also had the same situation and that was popular too. The glass station was also popular but didn't really need someone to watch over it. It was fairly straight forward. A number of people, myself included, had also brought an assortment of items from home to play around with. I ended up shooting a bunch of those things on my own and not at one of the stations- as this was more conducive to what my camera can do. But I did do a couple glass shots and glycerin shots.

@summerfield You can buy these items at a craft store. There were several colors (pink, silver and gold- I wish they had gotten some black too). They took a sheet of mylar (that's the shiny stuff they make those birthday balloons out of) and basically spread it out over a table. Then with an eye-dropper they sprinkled a bunch glycerin droplets on the mylar, towards the front edge of the mylar sheet. Then behind the droplets, they placed a number of things- like silk flowers, shells- you can pick and choose what you want, but the photographer who excels in this usually does it with flowers- both silk and natural. The rest is optional- using small sources of directed light, tripod, whatever suits your fancy. Laurinda uses a small light on a goose-neck clamp so she can move it around and her macro lens on the camera which is set up on a tripod. But there were a couple people who hand-held their cameras too. The result is a cross between a macro and a watercolor. They're very pretty.

@sangwann hahas- no Dione, I did this while they were totally focused on their picture taking- but I was not trying to hide the fact I was taking the picture and other members saw me taking it. Funny though, no one told them I'd taken the picture!

@lisatargowska Thank you Lisa! I had never thought of joining a camera club until 365. Several people here were the reason I did. So far what I've enjoyed the most is the lectures by other photographers. It's just interesting to hear their perspectives on why they shoot what they do and the creative process they go through to get the outcome.

Sounds like an interesting night and a well organised club to set these up and provide guidance.

@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole. I'm still new to it, but I do think it's going to be a great place to learn.

Great shots, Ann! I'm so glad that you have the photography club. You are definitely taking some professional shots. The one on the right is very pretty. Excellent textures and colors. Well done :)
