Snowdrift by olivetreeann

Snowdrift

While on my Shoot Out yesterday with my fellow camera club members, I really began to take Gibson's thoughts on simplicity to heart and purposely looked for scenarios where I could pare down the subject matter to one simple subject. This small snowdrift (really a small snowbank from where someone drove through the snow near the river) was a perfect subject to meet my goal. And it's probably one of my favorite shots of the day!

Nice shot, Ann. The shading and lighting is spot on. And it looks cold. Can you believe we have MORE of this white stuff coming? We're under an advisory from tomorrow night through Monday and I wasn't going to go to the stores tomorrow because everyone will be out getting Superbowl food but I guess I will have to now.

Awesome shot

Fantastic photo, love the shadows and the texture of the snowdrift right up the right 1/3 of the frame. Excellent!

Very cool. Love the shadows.

Lovely. This provides a great example for me as I consider shape and form in taking BW shots next week.

@prttblues Thanks Bev! You might be ok with the shopping as most serious superbowl party people will already have their supplies I think.

@kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
@kt8ird Thanks Kate!
@nadaa Thanks Nada!
@daisymiller Thanks Daisy! I'm glad it was helpful!

Your snow shot also kind of looks like waves crashing on the shore

Awesome shot!

I like the shapes in the snow :)
Can you remind me of the link to the flash of red instructions please? I can't seen to find it...

The shadows are great. Simplicity works!

This is very pretty! great job on the minimalism!

I really like the negative space

Super minimalist capture, like the effect of the negative space.

Love the light and dark's, and I see form in the drifts.

@anazad511 Thank you Ana!

Lovely form and shadows. And interesting framing.
February 2nd, 2015
FAV, love it, But I do doubt the frame in the shot is not contributing to the simplicity here. If it is outside the photo with bold black frame, it may enhance the look.

I like how the smooth snow looks like negative space, and emphasizes the forms of the drift. The composition really works! Nice great start to the month. :) I think I may be participating in flash of red February by shooting in b/w, but with my earlier commitment going to the camera settings challenges this year, reading the new book as well may be too much for me...Is that alright with you and Katie? Thanks so much to the two of you for coordinating this.

At first glance I thought this was sand. Beautiful capture Ann
February 2nd, 2015
Well spotted. Great forms and shadows.
February 2nd, 2015
@olivetreeann Thanks! :)

February 2nd, 2015
Well spotted , simple and so effective!

Love the simplicity of the subject and the beautiful capture of it. Fav.

@taffy Thank you Taffy! I do like this frame, but I think I agree with Yao and a simple black frame around the edge would have been better.
@yaorenliu Thank you Yao! And thank you for the fav. I agree- a simple black border would have been better.
@gratefulness Thank you Sandi! You don't have to do Flash of Red- it's a lot of work to combine challenges. I had started one of the camera settings challenges but cannot keep up with it and Flash of Red too, so I will not be completing it at this time.
@thistle Thank you Joyce! I thought that too when I was processing it.
@sangwann Thank you Dione!
@cimes1 Thank you Carole!
@craftymeg Thank you Margaret!
@pyrrhula Thank you Pyrrhula! And thank you for the fav too!

How dare someone drive on the pristine snow.
I've tried to catch up a bit and will have to move on now.
enjoy the rest of the winter and let's hope it will not be around for much longer.
February 3rd, 2015
@bruni Thank you Bruni! There's a roadway that runs next to the river so that folks can pull down and launch their boats and the rangers can maintain the area, so that someone drove there is logical and expected. Even in winter the rangers have to check things out.
February 3rd, 2015
I really like the shadow.
February 4th, 2015
@bill_fe Me too- that's what drew me to the shot.
February 4th, 2015
nicely composed
