Moment

I was coming home from work and had just gotten to the top of the mountain we live on. I was thinking ahead to what I needed to do once I got home- open the mail, make dinner, process pictures for 365, when off to the side of the road I saw this fellow. "Oh, there's a bear," I thought, and then it hit me- "this is my moment!" And if I didn't stop, I'd lose it! I didn't want to back up and scare him off, so I just stopped (thank goodness no one was behind me), pulled out my point and shoot and did my best to lean out of the open car window to get this- of course shooting behind me! I got off about 4 shots before "he" decided he'd had enough posing and garbage and sauntered off through the yard in the opposite direction of me. A fleeting, but exciting moment for me.
What an exciting moment.

....and THAT is why you must always have a camera with you! "You can never get the shot that you don't shoot", as one of my mentors always says...

How exciting that must have been! I can just picture you leaning out the window (at least you avoided the darn side mirrors since you had to aim back!) A contortionist AND a photographer.

That must have been quite a surprise! Have you seen one there before? Great shot of him and the mess he left behind ;-)

I take most of my photos out the car window.

Wow how exciting. Must be hungry if he is sorting through the garbage

I cannot imagine just casually thinking oh there’s a bear. So glad you thought of it and took the time to stop for the photo. It’s a magical moment

@ggshearron @brillomick Thanks Glover and Mickey- I always have my point and shoot. My phone was off and it takes forever to wake it up but the P&S is pretty much ready in seconds. It has come in handy on many occasions!

@milaniet LOL Hardly a contortionist- but sure felt like one- thanks Milanie!

@ludwigsdiana Thanks Diana- we see them around here on a fairly regular basis. They eat berries and such out in the woods, but they are also scavengers and if they smell something pleasantly interesting in your garbage, as you can see, they have no problem digging for it! I have had them in my back yard at my bird feeder in the past, but currently it's out of commission so I won't be seeing them this year I think. We also live near a large creek/small river which has trout. I think they fish there too, but I'm not sure. This fellow was headed in that direction after he was done with the garbage.

@onewing Hungry yes, but it's common to see them going through garbage around here. If they like what they smell, they'll dig until they find it.

@grammyn Brain drain- that gray area between "what I had to do at work today" and "what I need to do when I get home" and not really being 100% in your surroundings!

@ninaganci I would call our neighborhood "semi-wild". We are surrounded by woods and are near a stream but there are a lot of homes too. Thanks Nina!

@mittens Thanks Marilyn! They are more afraid of us than we are of them. They would rather run away than confront you- the only exception is a mother bear. If you get in between her and her cub, she may get aggressive but smart people rarely do that!

@randystreat @edorreandresen @bkbinthecity @joansmor @kjarn @hjbenson @ljmanning @haskar @pyrrhula @radiogirl @shutterbug49

Thank you Kathy, Dorre, Brian, Joan, Kathy, Harry, Laura, Hannah, Ferry, Kathy and Debbie!

He was on the bigger side, but most black bears are rather shy. They will run away if they can rather than confront you so I was more concerned that I'd scare him off and not get the shot than if he would come for the car. Thankfully he allowed me to take a few shots before he'd had enough and I was able to get one out of those shots that I liked!

Thanks to all for your views, comments and favs!
