The Bumblebee Cannot Fly.
According to the theory of aerodynamics and as may be readily demonstrated through laboratory tests and wind tunnel experiments, the Bumblebee is unable to fly. This is because the size, weight and shape of his body, in relation to the total wing spread, makes flying impossible.
BUT...the Bumblebee, being ignorant of these profound scientific truths, goes ahead and flies anyway- and manages to make a little honey every day!
I'd been thinking of posting this poem for some time and yesterday I was able to photograph some very busy bumblebees. The picture is quite old. First it was my grandfather's and then my mother had it. It was always a favorite of theirs. I can't take it apart to remove the picture from behind the reflective glass. I'm afraid I'd never get it back together, so I decided to shoot it as best I could.
It has become a favorite of mine as well. Everyone faces obstacles of some sort in their lifetime. Whether it's someone judging you by what they see, or a general bias against doing things a different way, it's always a daunting task to face up to that mindset and follow your convictions anyway. But that is what this poem is all about. If you know in your heart and are committed with your mind and body to do what you're meant to do, you will accomplish your goals in spite of the nay-sayers and statistics which say you won't succeed.
I decided to put this in my second album as a filler because of all the challenges and themes vying for space on the 365 album and surprisingly my anniversary date was open to fill. I think it was meant to be. When Jeff and I married we had a lot of statistics saying we'd probably not last. Both of us came from homes with alcoholics. We definitely fit the "opposites attract" cliche to a T (double cliche there!). We were young, inexperienced and so on! But in spite of all the things we had going against us, we really paid it no heed. Our faith and the community of Christians we were surrounded by, my supportive parents and just sheer stubborness that we'd show the doubters we could do it, gave us the incentive to "to go ahead and fly anyway" and through the years we've managed to make "a little honey everyday"!
A wonderful commentary Ann, and I think it is when we face those challenges with that kind of determination, then along with the support of those who care, and above all else, a faith and trust in a God of wonder, we can see some marvelous things unfold before our eyes.
