Commonwealth by olivetreeann

Commonwealth

A commonwealth is a nation or state governed by the people; a republic according to the dictionary. Along with Pennsylvania, the states of Massachusetts, Kentucky and Virginia are also called commonweaths.

Milo has been welcomed by a curious committee of dapper men, five to be exact, that rapidly fire off words and synonyms while reading a declaration made by the king:

"By order of Azaz the Unabridged-"
"King of Dictionopolis-"
"Monarch of Letters-"
"Emperor of Phrases, Sentences, and Miscellaneous Figures of Speech-"
"We offer to you the hospitality of our kingdom."
"Country."
"Nation."
"State."
"Commonwealth."
"Realm."
"Empire."
"Palatinate."
"Principality."
"Do all those words mean the same thing?" gasped Milo.
"Of course."
"Certainly."
"Precisely."
"Exactly."
"Yes," they replied in order.

If you are a business in Pennsylvania you have to have one of these. Sorry about the blurry middle, but I thought it best not to put our actual address out there on the world wide web.
Cool

Wow, you have had some challenges with this, well caught!

I think this was one of the best ideas the State had in a long time.

@kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
@alia_801 Thanks Alia- it was really one of the easier ones since I knew Pennsylvania is called a commonwealth rather than a state like most of our neighbors. "Dull" was much harder but thankfully it was cloudy that day!!
@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen- this one really wasn't that hard. I actually wanted to drive down to the "Welcome to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania" sign on the interstate, but just didn't have time to get there today, so plan B went into effect.
@digitalrn Thanks Rick- I was trying to find out when we "officially" became a commonwealth but I couldn't pin it down. It was some time after 1774, but before the signing of the Declaration.

you did a fantastic job with this one, ann. those squiggles actually looked like it was part of the horses and added the mystery in milo's adventure. i like it when people care about whether their state is a commonwealth or not :-)

@summerfield Thanks Summerfield. I have only been a resident of Pennsylvania for the last 8 years. So far, I do not see much difference between the STATE of New Jersey and the COMMONWEALTH of Pennsylvania! They are very similar. Maybe their differences were more obvious at the beginning of our country's history than now.

Cute scene from the book. I like the curving lines that you made wiping out the address too! Makes it more whimsical...like the book!

@espyetta Thanks MaryBeth- I hadn't thought about the whimsical aspect of this- that was a good idea! This really is a great book. It's been fun to photograph it!
