Erick and Becky began a major renovation of their front steps back in May. The old wooden porch (and balcony with roof above) was torn down and hauled away. Erick then dug out and poured a new foundation. When we visited later in the summer, Jeff helped him build a stone-faced wall around the new foundation. This weekend, they topped off the new foundation with some beautiful bluestone slabs. Of course, the design contained some lovely squares for the square challenge, so out came my camera. The circular shape that is peeking out of the upper right hand corner is one of three decorative bluestone flowers, hand cut and shaped by Erick. Each one will have a red sandstone center. These artistic touches are what makes Erick stand out from other masons and has helped him to land some restoration work on century old homes and beautiful stone churches.
@bruni You're right Bruni- since you don't see the whole design, it's anyone's guess as to what it really is. I've been cropping my square pictures to a square format, but the original shot shows the whole thing. I've been also trying to shot pictures of each phase of this project and maybe some day, they'll all turn up in a collage.
@prttblues Thanks Bev! The square challenge has been interesting for me- not only in finding squares to shoot, but also in cropping the shot to a square format- just a little extra I threw in for myself.
Nice square patterns and lines in your pic. You're doing much better with squares than me - I'm struggling just to get square pics. I think I'll find another more specific challenge for December!
@alia_801 Thanks Alia- I wasn't exactly sure how to go about it at first. I wasn't sure whether we were supposed to do pictures in a square format or pictures of squares. It certainly has become a game to find them! But I do find myself "storing" them up because I don't know if I'll see one every day or not. And as always- once I got my little "scthick" ("squared"), it's been easier to search for them.
