I pulled out a scrapbook my mother made for me many years ago to look for a picture from a Christmas of the past. But the picture I had in mind was not in this album. Rather than continuing the search, I managed to find something else- a description of Christmas when I was two. Aside from the joy of seeing my mother's delight in my antics that year, and appreciating her faithfulness to save fun cards and record our Christmas visitors, I was struck by the "everything old is new again syndrome" that connected this Christmas past with the current Christmas. For there, on the bottom of my mother's dutiful documenation of Christmas 1958 was the phrase "the chipmunk's are popular and you and Beth dance, dance, dance". Well, surprise, surprise! The chipmunks are popular again thanks to their movies being box office hits. However this year my cousin and I aren't able to dance, dance, dance! She's in North Carolina, and I'm in Pennsylvania.
Some things from the past are especially fun when a good memory is attached to them.
Oh....this is making me tear up a bit. To see those words she wrote so long ago...when you were her baby and she was, as you say "dutifully" recording your Christmas. That is so touching and bittersweet. awww.....
Thanks to all! It's been a busy and energy filled weekend and I'm fighting to keep my eyes open. I'll be catching up on all your shots in the next few days- but for now- it's bedtime for me!!
I love this photo and the antique look of it . . it has the beauty of age and the lovely comment written by you mother. Couldn't be more perfect and so wonderful that you have it now.
@karenann Thanks Karenann. It is a sweet keepsake, but the poor thing is truly falling apart, so I'm looking into ways to restore it- first up re-attaching all the pictures that have fallen out since the sticky stuff on the tape has dried out! @sarasdadandmom lol Terry- yes I suppose we could have skype-danced. That would have been a sight! @bkbinthecity Thanks bkb! It is a priceless keepsake and one I have to give some TLC to. Like me, it has gotten a bit rusty around the edges- so some minor repairs are needed to make it last. @mrssmith Thanks Carla! This book is particularly precious because of all the things my mother wrote in it. It's a double edged sword too since making your scrapbooks archival wasn't even thought of when she put it together, there are many pictures and cards that have been damaged from the tape and pens she used. But I can restore some of it. I think my granddaughter Leigh will have fun looking at it when she visits some time.
I love not only the scrapbook, but the photo you have taken. Your mother's words are so clear and readable. I would suggest that you also scan your book in addition to restoring it as much as possible.
What a great idea your mom had..and how wonderful to have this as a precious keepsake..you could pass it on to your grandchildren..I kow ifI were one of them I would treasure it....the picture looks awesome too.
Ann I would like to thank you for taking the time to comment on all of my pictures. very much appreciated Ann.
@dmariewms Thanks Marie- that is a great idea! My scanner is small, but I can probably do a half page at a time. @bruni Thank you Bruni- I'm quite behind on my commenting, but by Friday, I'll be caught up. You are so faithful to comment on mine and I appreciate that as much as you do! Yes, this is a keepsake and I know that it will be something someone will enjoy having after I'm gone- just not sure which grandchild that will be yet! But Leigh does love hearing stories about all her "greats" as she calls them.
@pandorasecho Thanks Dixie! Well, I don't always like to face the fact that it's been a few years since they were introduced the world and I was 2 when they first hit the stores, but it just goes to show that some of those old sayings have some truth to them- especially "Everything old is new again".
@alia_801 Thanks Alia- yes, this one goes pretty far back but some things go around and come around again even quicker. And then there are the things that are better to just be left alone!
@digitalrn Thanks Rick!
@espyetta Thank you MaryBeth!
