Decided to get real fancy today for the third wildcard assignment in the Opposites Challenge. And for all my loving followers who have so patiently awaited a real full-blown selfie, it's here. But I just can't be totally in the spot light by myself; just a little too shy for that. So, I decided to share it with my great great grandmother Selena Jane Westbrook Shave. I think we share a small likeness to one another; don't you?
You certainly do..it's a beautiful pictures yours and hers. I love her beautiful names. what name does she go by? I was called by my second name and although I like my first name better - which is ELsa - I never changed it when I grew up.
Oh Ann I think I got it all wrong..it's your great great grandmother and not your granddaughter but you...sorry for the mix up. so the question should then read what did she go by.......
@potsbypam Thank you Pam! @kerristephens Thank you Kerri! @bruni Thank you Bruni! Well, I never met her personally but every place her name has been recorded- it's the full name! But I believe she went by Selena Jane. My aunt was named after her with the name Jane. Interesting that you prefer your first name but go by your second- my sister went through something similar. She was named Sara Kimberly and as a child we all called her "Kimmy" which was eventually shortened to Kim. That all began because my great grandmother on mom's side was Sara and still alive when Kim was born. But when she started high school she really wanted to be called Sara, however Kim was too well-known for her. In college she fully went to Sara and boy does it cause a lot of confusion when people hear us call her Kim! But knowing how much she loves the name, I always try to introduce her by that to others. I think she appreciates the fact that I know how much it means to her. All I can say is you saved a lot of people from confusion! lol (Elsa is a beautiful name!)
This is an absolutely perfect theme photo. Yes, I do think that you resemble each other and you're both so pretty! This would be a wonderful idea for anybody to do with photos. Your color tones are perfect here and love the whole composition. BTW, where do they post these challenges? Never saw this one. :)
@karenann Thanks Karenann! You are very kind! I get these challenges from Alia (who posted just above you here) @alia_801. She's very clever with these monthly themes. I'd suggest following her and letting her know you're interested in hearing about the next one when she starts it up.
@sanera Thanks Samantha- yes it is. It's in Picnik under collage- I think it's called "fancy collage" and there are several kinds to choose from. This is in the Heritage collection. I wanted something a little more antique looking than just the usual collage. @dmariewms Thanks Marie! I do think its fun to see how the different genes pop up from both sides. This is my great great on my father's father's mother's side (wow that's confusing!). @mrssmith Thank you Carla! @digitalrn Thanks Rick!
wow! i thought that was you when you were younger. i love old photographs (even of people i don't know). i really think they are romantic, the expressions of people, the feel of the photographic paper, the smell of time and the memories that they hold.
nice self-portrait you got there, ann. the sepia works as it matches the older photograph and goes with the album. fabulous! great post!
@summerfield Thanks Summerfield! The old photo is REALLY old! It's not even on photo paper, it's on a very thick cardboard. Unfortunately it does not have a date on it. But I have always loved her expression. I think she was a very confident young woman judging by her ease in front of the camera. And those shots were no quick snaps like we have today. The exposure time was much longer! As for my shot, I'm quite pleased with it- not only because I did it (I really HATE having my picture taken, let alone doing selfies) but the set up, execution and processing were the most elaborate I've done to date. Since I don't have a tripod, I used a bookshelf in my living room, hit the 10 second timer and ran around, kneeled on the couch and grabbed the polka dot pillow from the bedroom for a retro sort of look, made sure I was smiling (though out of breath!), hair in place and hands in a nice position. It took about 10 tries- because I'd always forget about my hands!- and 3 of them came out pretty good. The best one (this one) was in color (even though I did take some in sepia), so I post processed it in sepia. But the icing on the cake was the cloning! In reality, this shot had 2 lamps, a piece furniture, a chair, a mantle and a fireplace with woodstove in the background! All painstakingly removed by cloning over and over again until it just looked like a white wall back there! So now you know the secret! I love photo editing!!
Amazing resemblance, Ann. How fortunate to have such a neat photo of your GG Grandmother. I love old photos. The sepia tone is perfect and what an amazing composition. I just read your last post and am impressed with the perseverance, patience and detail that goes into each photo you display on 365.
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
