No Good Shots Today

I'm still trying to figure out why my Nikon is constantly focusing and refocusing. I've read through the book three times, set and reset some of the settings and still the lens whirrs and moves when I go to take a shot. Needless to say, all the macros I took today were out of focus. There wasn't a good one in the lot, so I resorted to processing. Somehow this seems to depict the way I feel right now!
This is cool

As an amateur I can't help you, Ann, but you sure concocted a lovely kaleidoscope shot here. Super cool creation. Shhhh....don't tell anyone. This cudda made the pop page!

My Nikon does the same. Drives me crazy...so I started manually focusing. Anyhow this is a very pretty composition all the same!

This is a fav. Don't tell me it is anything but a masterpiece

Cool abstract picture! I have a switch to shut off the autofocus that allows me to focus the picture manually. I had this trouble when I was trying to take the picture of the fog the other day. I think the camera doesn't know what to focus on when this happens, so you have to do the work for it. You might be too close to your subject. These are just a few things that I have figured out on my own. I hope this helps and you don't mind me suggesting these things....

Great abstract, reminds me of the kaleidoscopes I played with as a child. I shoot all my macro shots in full manual. Turn off auto focus, set aperture and shutter speed myself. Is it possible to change your auto focus setting to spot instead of multi-segmented?

@kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
@cimes1 Thank you Carole- your such a great cheer leader! I really think I've used the hypnotic effect one too many times though!
@sgoodin1 thanks Sara- I'm not quite sure how to get this camera to focus manually. I keep reading the booklet, but I must not be setting the camera correctly because it all comes out blurry. I will keep trying though.
@pandorasecho Thank you Dixie- you make me smile!!
@mrssmith Thanks Carla- between you and Sara, I will have to try the manual again to see if I have an option similar to that. And I still need to check out YouTube as you suggested- that might help too. I've had a lot of writing to do this week which has taken a bit longer than I hoped. Maybe tomorrow...

@rhubbard Thanks Richard- yes I believe I have the camera set on spot focus right now. This camera was a gift, but I don't think I would have bought it for myself. I like it in some ways- it takes a very nice landscape and when the macro cooperates- it's great. But lately I can actually see the picture going in and out of focus and I don't remember it doing that before. I am going to see if I can set it as you have suggested. Funny thing is that this has made me miss some of my little p & s 's capabilities!

Don't give up, somedays are just like that!

I think it is so difficult to read and understand the manuals. I like to play anbd experiment, but then eventually I focus on one thing and try to understand it.
January 25th, 2012
@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen- I'll try!
@digitalrn Thanks Rick! In most cases I can read something and understand it. But this manual is harder than learning Hebrew!

Ann
thank you - I thought I was the only one with focusing problems.... but I like what you did here very much.
January 25th, 2012
Hope you figure it out soon! For some reason, my camera hates to focus on reds. Blue berries, nice! Red berries, fuzzy.

great caleidoscope.. my quote of yesterday fits in here.. "You can't depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.
Mark Twain".. have a nice day =D
January 25th, 2012
Cool, I like this.

I don't have a Nikon (yet?) but I've similar problems when trying to focus and I'm too close to the object. In particular, depending on your focal length, there's a maximum distance for focusing: if I zoom out completely I can shoot macros at ~1cm. This is not true whith higher focal lenths. That effect is great and I've seen it also on a couple of pictures of @filsie65
January 25th, 2012
@annbarber Thanks Ann! This is very strange to me because I will be at a distance where I see the object in focus, go to press the shutter and all of a sudden I can see the lens moving back and forth. Weird.
@dmariewms Thanks Marie! Interesting that the red causes problems. I wonder if it's the wavelengths of the light that does that.
@inertie Thanks Inertia- yes that quote does fit. My imagination has been a little sluggish these days. It usually happens about mid-way through winter, so it's not unusual.
@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole!
@woot Thanks Davide! Thanks to everyone here I've got a few things to experiment with. I'll add your suggestion to the list too- sounds like a good one! Glad you like the effect- it makes a lot of bad photos look good and a lot of good photos great. But I really felt it was an excuse this time, not really what the photo deserved! I'll have to check filsie's photos out!

Hi! I really like this - the kaleidoscope is odd, isn't it - doesn't always concentrate on the bit of the photo that you notice most! I love the way the pinky hues pop up here and there. Super one - love lots of the effects on picnik and will miss them.....
January 25th, 2012
@filsie65 Thanks Phil! I know, I'm so disappointed that they're closing up shop. I'm not sure what I'm going to do to replace it! )o: The original of this shot looks nothing like what happened to it in the effect! In actuality, it was 3 glass balls of green and blues colors, inside a glass pitcher which was also green. The wall is white and the light in the lamp is also white. So I don't know where those pink and orange tones are coming from!
January 25th, 2012
hi pixlr seems to have this effect in the software, i was having a play with it today as a picnik replacement @olivetreeann
January 26th, 2012
Seeeeeeeee ....what did I tell you, Ann. You DID make the PP. Congrats ;-))
January 26th, 2012
Congrats on the PP! Woohoo!
January 26th, 2012
Love it
January 26th, 2012
Do this more often, Ann! You don't have problems with that camera at all . . you're a WINNER! PP, girl!
January 27th, 2012
i have this problem too when I am too close with my Nikon. I have only had mine a month though and am still learning how to use it. This is a PP so well done! I love it!
January 27th, 2012
I like it. :) It is very interesting! I love it!
January 27th, 2012
@kmrtn6 Thanks Kylie- I will definitely check that out asap. I'm visiting family right now-so as soon as I get home, I'll look it up.
@cimes1 I've been visiting with the family and trying to stay away from 365 until I get back and look what happens!! You did call it Carole, but I can't believe it! Thanks for being such a great cheer leader!
@lisjam1 Thanks Lisa- I can't believe it- and I'm not even home to print out the proof!
@melorac Thank you Carole!
@karenann I can't believe this Karenann! I've been off 365 for a couple days to concentrate on visiting with the family and this makes it to the PP! Too funny!
@nzmamatotwo Thanks Sarah! I think it's going to take me a while to get it figured out, but I'm not going to give up. I'd really like to get it. Thankfully I still have my older camera to fall back on when I get really frustrated!
@raejae Thanks RaeJae! I appreciate your enthusiasm!
January 28th, 2012
@olivetreeann no problem. :)
January 28th, 2012
Love the kaleidoscope effect, but I know how you feel on days like that, did you work out the problem, mine does that if I'm too close to the subject.
June 16th, 2012
@lorraineb Hi Lorraine! Yes, in a way- I stopped using the camera! I've pulled it out recently and am intending to start using it again more regularly (it was a "new to me" gift) and because it's been dormant for a while, it seems to have stopped. So we'll see! In the meantime I'm content with my Canon p & s.
