The epic 1979 film "Apocalypse Now" documented the Vietnam War in cinema verite style. It was directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola and the screen play was written by John Milius. Milius originally called the piece "The Psychedelic Soldier" but changed the name to Apocalypse Now after being inspired by a button badge popular among hippies during the 1960's which said "Nirvana Now". He was also influenced by an article written by Michael Herr entitled "The Battle for Khe Sanh" which referred to drugs, rock 'n' roll, and airstrikes. Milius drew inspiration in the literary world from Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", but it is widely recognized that the film deviates greatly from the book. In spite of that, Apocalypse Now is considered one of the finest films on the Vietnam War according to the folks who decide these things. Coppola envisioned the film as "the definitive statement on the nature of modern war, the difference between good and evil, and the impact of American society on the rest of the world". In an interview when the film was first released he said, "I want to take the audience through an unprecedented experience of war and have them react as much as those who had gone through the war". The film starred Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall and Martin Sheen.
I find it interesting that the horror of war is often associated with what the Bible calls "The End Times" or "The Apocalypse". I understand why people sense there is a connection. The images in Revelation appear to be similar to the aftermath of mortars and bombs. The battles there are the consummate struggle of good versus evil, where Good finally triumphs for all time. It leaves me wondering that even though many reject the Bible as something fictitious there might be something within our subconscious that still believes there will be a day when the world is set aright and wars will no longer be a part of our experience.
Awesome processing ....the photo is beautiful. It looks like a beautiful abstract painting. You could frame this one ...without a doubt! I have seen that movie.
@karenann Thanks Karenann- there's actually 5 pictures layered here plus a texture! I haven't seen the movie but I don't usually watch this kind anyway. So this is all sooi (straight out of the imagination!). @kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
@bkbinthecity Thanks Brian! @digitalrn Thanks Rick! @httpgeffed Thanks Colleen! @henrir Thanks Henri! @mrssmith Thanks Carla! No, I haven't read it. I probably won't. I'm not good with that type of book. I understand that there is darkness, evil and sorrow out there- and all that. It's just to graphic for me to read about it or see it in a film. It gets stuck in my head and I will have bad dreams for weeks!
Thanks all- although I hadn't seen the movie, I tried to keep its meaning in mind as a processed this.
i saw this much touted movie and found it incredibly boring i was literally snoring according to my date. your photo is more interesting than that movie.
