Magnolia by olivetreeann

Magnolia

I took this shot at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton NJ when Debbie and I went there last week. The bush it grew on was HUGE! We couldn't tell whether it was a Magnolia (the blossom certainly looked like one) or a Rhododendron (the leaves looked more like that than a Magnolia) or maybe a hybrid??? After looking at some shots on line, I'm inclined to say it's a Magnolia, but I am no plant expert, so I could be wrong. Nonetheless it's a spectacular blossom and the fragrance it produced was absolutely heavenly!

In Mythbuster's language the identity of this plant has been "confirmed" thanks to a shot posted by another 365er. It's a Magnolia.
Very beautiful!

Stunning!! I have wanted to shoot one that's at my work place. It's huge as well and the blooms are stunning. :-)

I have a magnolia tree and the centre of this flower looks like one but there are no stamens falling out of it and much fewer petals. Odd - perhaps someone can enlighten? Lovely picture!

@vesna0210 Thank you Vesna!
@vposey Thank you Vickie! Does yours look like this?
@maggiemae Thank you Maggie! I'm only familiar with the smaller ones that have pinkish-white blossoms. I hope someone in my followers will recognize what this is and hopefully confirm its identify.
@simster Thank you Simmy!

Lovely shot! I think it's a magnolia, but there seem to be different varieties. My magnolia blossoms look a lot like this, though the petals are a little bigger. I love the way the center petal often curves over the stamens, as if protecting the future seeds.

@eudora Thank you Diane! This blossom is BIG. I am in really tight on this shot. So it may be the same kind as yours. The leaves through me off because they reminded me of a rhododendron. But I've never seen a rhod. bush this large nor with blossoms this large- or with such a beautiful fragrance. One blossom had dropped its seeds and they had landed in the curl of one of the petals. We carefully put them in a kleenex and brought them home- who knows- maybe we'll be able to get one to grow!
@mrssmith203 Thank you Carla!
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
@daisy Thank you Kathryn!

Fabulous details. I know magnolias have the most wonderful scent and in my very limited knowledge rhododendron have very little scent.

Thank you Rick, Timothy, Sally, and Dione! I was looking through shots today and saw MaryBeth's post of the same kind of blossom- so now I know it's truly a Magnolia. And yes, it has a wonderful scent Sally!
