This is not exactly what I had hoped to do for this challenge but it has been a busy time for us with a family member who's going through a bit of a struggle. Add to that the disadvantage of living in a rural area with only small towns to shoot "street photography" in and the challenge grows!
I skimmed through Leuthard's book Going Candid and took note of a few points:
1) Street photography is the documentation of life in public in a candid way
2) Street photography is a picture where nothing is set up, nobody was asked if they would be in the picture- they just are, and the conditions of the picture will never be the same again.
3) Street photography is a single human moment captured in a decisive moment.
Leuthard wrote, "In street photography there is only one thing that is relevant. It's all about they eye, your eye. You have to see things before you capture them. No matter what camera you are using, first you have to see what is going on, you have to realize what is happening next and you have to virtually compose the photo."
As I read his comments I came to the conclusion that Leuthard is shooting in cities that have lots of action and subject matter to choose from. I think in a way this has limited his definition of street photography. Although the demands of my week have limited my ability to get to a city for shooting, I have been "on the street". It's just a smaller, quieter street! This picture was taken from the second floor of our church before the Good Friday service. It doesn't look like Leuthard's work or one of his candids, but that's ok by me. It's a street in my world that captures a brief moment in time. It's semi-human in that someone is driving that car but not as human as one of Leuthard's. All in all- it works for me!
Thanks for your expressions of care and concern. Our niece is coming to grips with some things in her life- poor choices and their results- but is having a hard time forgiving herself and moving forward. She will be seeing a medical doctor this week, but in the meantime she has been spending time with us for some faith-based encouragement. All in all- she's going to be OK but it will take her some time to sort through it all.
So many ways to look at things! To some the picture may seem ordinary but I am enjoying the pov and looking out through the screening, hope all is well. Happy Easter.
