Mahr's typical style is to take an older photo and add a 3D update in front of it and then photograph the two together. But I also discovered a series she called "Ordered Interiors". If featured an old photo album which was missing its pictures and some old candles whose wax had dripped on to the album. The pictures were taken looking straight down on top of the album. Mahr was fascinated by the missing pictures and wondered about the people who'd once been featured on their pages. I was intrigued with the concept as I do love the old photos I have from my family. I'm also blessed to own one special album which has some pictures in it but also is missing a few. So I took advantage of the missing pictures and replicated Mahr's picture without damaging my antique album!
Great shot, Ann. The album looks like it has depth where the missing picture should be. Love the melted down candle. Great set up, concept and very creative idea. I wouldn't even know how to go about reproducing anyone else's style. I would need a photo class to do that and they aren't free - or cheap (at least not here). Great challenge. I know you'll do great and your photos will be on a wall once more.
Thank you Nicole, Tara, Kerri, Lisa, Suse, Carole and Kali! I'm glad you like my take on Mahr's work. I also enjoyed her more typical style but just could not find the right combo to replicate it. But then, this shot is really a nice combo of Mahr and myself and perhaps it's the better way to approach the challenge after all!
Bev- these challenges are fun. It's not that you have to duplicate a picture exactly- although you could if you wanted to. It's more about style and I think you could do this if you wanted to. Some photographers- maybe not- but some you could. I don't do them all. I do the ones that I find appealing. This particular photographer had a very interesting life story too- so that made it even more appealing to "copy" her.
@daisymiller Thank you Daisy! It is truly styled after Mahr's set-up. I liked her thought behind the picture. @digitalrn Thank you Rick! @nancih Thank you Nanci! It's rather fun and it gives me a reason to dust off the knick-knacks and play with them. (o: @kimmistephens Thank you Kimmi!
