I think it's either Jupiter or Venus. I couldn't quite figure out what the star gazing sights were telling me concerning the bright objects in our western sky. While it will not grace the pages of an astronomy magazine, it was exciting for me to push my camera's zoom to the limit and get something passible to post! It was also interesting to see the way the "star" (or planet?) pulsated! That's why you see a ring around the edge of the white circle.
If you're up on star gazing, let me know if you know what this is!!
I did some further research by looking at other pictures of my two options and here is what I've determined. It's not Jupiter, it's Venus. Jupiter photos (point and shoot and hand-held) distinctly showed Jupiter's stripes and a couple of its larger moons. Venus on the other hand had this ring around the edge in every shot. So, it's Venus!
