garlic bulb

Our photo club will be participating in a Garlic Festival this fall. As part of our display we are working in connection with several local farmers who grow garlic. Yesterday we visited the Josie Porter Farm in Stroudsburg to take a tour and spend time learning about the different aspects of farming garlic. This may look like a healthy garlic bulb to you (and it is) but it's undersized. Our guide explained that had it reached its peak it would be about double the size! Even though it was pulled out of the ground a bit prematurely for us to photograph it was still usable so it went home with one of the photographers. I brought home some too- a different kind and used it in my meal last night (quite tasty!). This was one of my favorite shots of the day and I will be sending it to the farm for them to use on their website (hence the signature!).

There will be more garlic shots to follow as we will be following the harvest and planting for the next crop too.
Nice looking bulb. I like it in B&W

Fascinating shot! I like the DOF, the detail and the dirt on the garlic and the hand holding it. Including the hand emphasizes the grower as well as the garlic.

Fabulous capture, the black and white offers so much more depth and texture to the shot

@henrir Thank you Henri! Although the color shot was nice, it was a photo that was perfect for black and white. And so it came to be.
@eudora Thank you Diane and thank you so much for the fav! I hadn't really thought about that when I took the shot- I was thinking more about showing the size of the bulb, but I really like how you interpreted it and it actually is more meaningful that way.
@bkbinthecity Thank you Brian! I've never been, but I'll be there this year. From the looks of the promotional material it's going to be fun and something you and Melody would have enjoyed as I know you go to many things like this in Edmonton.
@aikimomm Thanks Phoebe!
@thistle Thank you Joyce!
@quietpurplehaze Thank you Hazel!
@salza Thank you Sally! I thought the color was nice too, but I knew putting it in black and white would bring out more of the texture.
@pyrrhula Thank you Pyrrhula! Do they grow garlic on some of the farms in the Netherlands?
@maggiemae Thank you Maggie! Yes, it's one of their bigger crops. They not only supply garlic for their food co-op, they also supply garlic for local restaurants and a couple farmer's markets.
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
@mzbull Thank you Mz!
@janiskay Thank you Janice! And thank you so much for the fav! I would imagine that the farms which grow for larger stores or supermarket chains harvest them a little earlier and not as large just for the turnaround in time. They don't make money unless something is for sale in the store. So even if the bulb is smaller, it is still edible and can be sold.
@pistache Thank you Clare!
