I gave Sam a camera for his birthday and I was so pleased to hear that he'd brought it along when we met up with my daughter-in-law to bring Leigh home. So while Piggy was enjoying the swimming, Sam and I took a photo walk. At first he didn't think there was much to photograph as the water was so low and not much was blooming at the swimming area. But with some guidance from Grammy, Sam is beginning to take a second look and is learning what Freeman Patterson calls, "the art of seeing".
Massive upload tonight to catch up with what I missed while Leigh was here. Don't feel obligated to comment on them all- just choose the ones that catch your eye.
@maggiemae Thanks Maggie- not sure what you mean by "if it goes"? It is a fully functional camera- uses a memory card and batteries just like a real digital camera. He can upload pictures to the computer and edit them in camera as well. Although it looks like binoculars it is actually designed that way so that it's easier for children to carry and to look through the viewfinder. (And if you're shopping for a girl it comes in the more traditional girl colors too.) Sam loves it and has already learned how delete the shots he doesn't think are good enough to keep.
@aikimomm Thanks Phoebe! @barb_b Thank you Barb! Up to this point he has come on photo walks and directed me to take the photos. Now he can take his own. @cruiser Thanks Chris! One of the things Patterson recommends is to go to a spot with your camera but before you take any shots, he challenges you to sit there for 15 minutes just observing your surroundings. In his challenge he assigns the photographer the bathroom! But this "game" will work anywhere. The thought behind it is that you will be forced to look more carefully at your surroundings. I have found it extremely helpful in my photographic journey. I can now see things in places where I thought a shot did not exist. Give it a try (in fact I'd highly recommend the book: Photography and the Art of Seeing by Freeman Patterson.
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri! @grammyn Thanks Katy! @salza Thank you Sally! He has always demonstrated a "good eye". It will be fun to watch his talent grow over the years if he sticks with it. @frappa77 Thank you Francesca for those kind words!
@thresheg Thanks Graham! @randystreat Thank you Kathy! He really gets in to it too! @altadc Thanks Alta! Yes, 365er for sure!
