My grandmother (Mom's Mom) grew up in Illinois farmland and then moved to Wyoming. She had never seen either the redwoods or the ocean. In typical calm Grace style, she said, "They don't look red to me." and later, "It's wet."
@francoise she could dominate a room just by sitting quietly on the edge of the crowd, at least as far as children were concerned, she always had gum in her purse and a lap made for snuggling on. I added a link to a picture from about 1928 when she was a lot smaller.
