This shot was taken at the Twilight Criterium which is a fast-paced, high stakes cycling race in the heart of downtown Boise every year. It's a very exciting race that attracts over 20,000 spectators to see cyclists from around the world compete. This photo is of the men's professional event. It is early in the one hour event before a clear leader had pulled away from the peloton. I was fascinated with how close the athletes ride next to each other. It must take such concentration to maintain their lines at such high speeds.
Check out another race photo in my Extras album when things go wrong:
Amazing capture of momentum! How did you do that? It's as if you are standing right in the way of the race but perfectly positioned to take this photo. Fabulous!!!
@jyokota Thank you for your comment, Junko. I scouted out a prime spot before the race. I was standing about 12 feet away from the lead cyclist behind the spectators' fence. I liked this spot because I could see the bikers coming at me and then navigating the turn.
All that comes to mind (apart from such a cool photo!) is "slide to the left.... slide to the right" I hope you know the song or that'll make no sense! haha
That's a great shot - you've got the angle just right. I love cycle races - they're so exciting and, as you say, astonishing that they manage to ride so close without more accidents
