The theme for next month's meeting of Winchester U3A Photography Group is 'panorama'. I have no software to do this and anyway (lazily) prefer to use the in-camera function.
This function has its own drawbacks: with the Sony a6000 the speed of movement of the camera is critical and I often get messages on screen to move more quickly or slowly. This is one of the few that I managed to complete to the maximum length.
Another difficulty, as in this shot, is judging the height to hold the camera e.g. I've barely included the top of the tower of the Norman church (not to mention the truncated tree) This panorama was created sweeping from the left, the mode I find easiest.
I was practising in the walled garden at the Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty. On the left, the gardener's wheelbarrow (I managed to avoid his ladder propped up against the wall) and on the right a clipped yew hedge.
Constructive criticism welcomed please. I'll be posting a few more panoramas in the next days.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Oh, how lovely! I've been a bit chicken to try out panoramas, but maybe I should give it a try... I really enjoy your pictures, Hazel @quietpurplehaze, even though I haven't had a lot of time available to comment on them properly.
Berni, thank you for your comments about my photos. That's really nice to know. If you have an in-camera panorama function, do give it a try - just a bit of patience needed at first!
I have a panoramic function in my camera but have no idea how to use it & have never tried. Would like to practice fir our holidays so you might just have spurred me on. You did so well here & I love the amount of content you have there.
Paula, I'm a bit surprised at the number of folk who say that! Probably it's not an option on a DSLR? I wouldn't be bothered to create one myself but it's an in-camera option on all my cameras.
Thank you and thank you for all the favs on my photos. I've now found an option to do a wider (tall) panorama on my camera and I think it would suit this best (not cut off the top of the church tower - have to go back and try and see!
This camera is a bit tricky - my other - Panasonic Lumix and Fuji X20 are much easier for panoramas - do have a go!!

Maybe we should start a theme-panorama?!!!
Pat, do have a try - good fun! Thank you for the comments.
You need to move the camera along to create the panorama so I don't think a tripod would be useful. I don't want to be 'encumbered' by one anyway!

but I find I gradually go up hill and the end result is a bit silly! Challenge on the way
