Variegated Fritillary by rhoing

Variegated Fritillary

What a day at the lake! I had a great row, and when I returned to the dock area, I saw several butterflies flicking about. Among them was this Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia, family Nymphalidae, subfamily Heliconiinae). I’ve only managed to photograph one of these once before — http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/743332 — but I posted something else that day, Chlorochlamys phyllinaria (Geometridae), http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2012-09-18

I also photographed what I think might be a Red Admiral, but I’m not sufficiently confident of the ID yet to submit it to BAMONA.

Out on the lake, I photographed a damselfly that hitched a ride on the drain plug of my scull,
» Enallagma signatum (Orange Bluet) — http://bugguide.net/node/view/780399 — and a patch of Opuntia humifusa (family Cactaceae, known variously as “Eastern Prickly Pear,” “Devil’s Tongue” or “Indian Fig”):

Superb deep yellows. Nice focus, sharp on the subject and a nice blur beginning in the background.
