I don't know where to begin to ID fungi, so I'm submitting this to my plant expert. Even though he seems to be more on the vascular plant side (Plantae kingdom), and fungi aren't plants (Fungi kingdom), he often knows anyway and there are fungi images on PhytoImages, too. :)

Very cool shot! The shroom experts tell me to split the stem - take a picture and then take a picture of the gills underneath. I can give you some links, including the expert id FB page, if you want them. Here's one of the shroom links I use. At least they give you photos to compare yours to. https://www.mushroomexpert.com

@marlboromaam Yeah, my plant guy told me about photo’ing the gills underneath. I wasn’t feeling quite that ambitious this particular day! I was just surprised to see stems at all when I saw this image on a larger screen! Thanks for the help and the link!

@rhoing You're welcome. I hope it helps! I still have several I'm trying identify and I didn't get pics of a split stem or gills either. LOL! I don't want to have to kill them to identify them!

@dutchothotmailcom Yes, nine years. I used to do this — list past shots on the same date — and I resumed because of a comment you made on a recent post: “I started 365 for myself,. just to record photos and later to look back.” So now I’m looking back, too, with each post for now. :)
(I have the basic text and html code in a .txt file and just copy it into the 365 posting, then add the titles from past years.)

That’s one strange mushroom!

Very interesting.

@marlboromaam This is one of my issues with bugs, too: I do not want to disturb them or capture them to photograph them. (Without a long lens, that would be an option, but I don't want to inadvertently kill one!)
