War of 1812: Military Music [Filler]

These are authentic American military uniforms for musicians. Don’t be fooled by the red. The color scheme for musicians’ uniforms is reversed from the soldiers’ uniforms. Soldiers had dark blue shirts with red cuffs and collars … so the musicians had red shirts with dark blue cuffs and collars. (Not necessarily to be confused with the so-called Red Shirts on “Star Trek”!)

This was a fascinating presentation. The drummer in the back is John Thompson, whose background is in music (bachelor’s and master’s degrees in composition), although he is currently “Manager of Programs” at Fort Meigs.
» Read about John Thompson in the staff listing
» YouTube video, “Music at Fort Meigs: The Fife”, with John Thompson (center, above)
» Also learned about the history of the song, “Yankee Doodle”; see Wikipedia entry.

Although it was hot, we were very happy we stumbled into this historical site, particularly on a weekend when they had some fascinating presentations.

NOTE This finishes what I have to post for May 2022 (in August 2023), and finishes filling in the hole I had from January to summer. Now I can jump ahead to the end of the calendar year to start to catch up (which I will likely never do, but one can dream).
