This area just over the border into Victoria produces The Best fortifieds wines in Australia. Tokays (spelt to avoid legal problems),Muscats, Tawnys and Vintage Ports. Several of the wineries are settler wineries - still owned and worked by the original settler families. They have introduced a 4 tiered system for their wines : Rutherglen = under 8yrs old, Classic = between 8 and 15 yrs old, Grand = between 16 and 25 yrs old, Rare = over 25 yrs old. The Rare Tokay is beyond good - beautiful burnt caramel flavours!!!
My mouth is watering already........thanks for the specifications too, I found that fascinating. My favourite ever white port came from a tiny winery called Bethany Wines in the Barossa Valley just north of Adelaide. Nectar! But I am a sucker for a good fortified wine. Rare Tokay sounds sumptuous!
@jgpittenger Hi Jane - all very yummy and lots of fun! And thank you for your nice comment on the collage - it seems the easiest way to summarize the feel of each district. :)
@casablanca Hi Casablanca- the Barossa is a lovely area too - so many wineries - so little time!! :) If you like fortifieds you would just love any of the Rare fortifieds!!
