Rule of Space. by robz

Rule of Space.

The 52week challenge had "Rule of Space" as its theme. I found this harder than I'd thought. Apparently the idea is to have the subject facing the camera and to give him enough space to walk into. Finding a suitable subject was tricky - getting it to face the camera was even trickier. I don't think this is a very good example.
Great use of negative space. That bird looks beautiful up there. Fav.

Sometimes filling those challenges is tough- especially if your week doesn't match up with the assignment. I just like this shot whether it lives up to the "Rule of Space" (which I've never heard of in all the years I've studied art) or not. I like the lone bird and the negative space surrounding him. Good shot!

All these rules really confuse me, but this is a great shot!

@sangwann Thanks Dione - I think you are right - it's negative space - but not really that Room to Move idea. It's nice to know that the cormorant looked good anyway! Cheers :)

@fbailey That's very kind of you FB - and encouraging. It sounds as if the Room to Move thing is very similar to the Negative Space idea. It is all a bit confusing - probably should have done some more research! :)

@sarahlth Thanks Sarah - the cormorant eventually co-operated - I've tried to catch him before... Cheers Rob

@30pics4jackiesdiamond Thanks Jackie - I didn't quite know if it was the same thing or not?

@olivetreeann Thanks so much Ann - it was really interesting to hear you say you've never heard of a Room to Move - sorry Rule of Space! concept. It was a bit confusing - it seemed to be tied up with the direction that the subject was facing. It's nice to know that you liked the overall shot. Thanks very much!

@suzanne234 Hi Suzanne - it is a bit confusing. So confusing that I just realized I've called it the wrong names several times. Room to Move = Rule of Space. LOL

@sangwann @fbailey @sarahlth @30pics4jackiesdiamond @olivetreeann @suzanne234 Hi again Dione, FB, Sarah, Jackie, Ann and Suzanne. I've just realised that the cormorant photo has ended up on both the Popular Page and the Trending Page. Quite amazing! I was even silly enough to call it Room to Move instead of Rule of Space.. It was lovely of you all to bother with your helpful feed back and favs - I really appreciate it and your continuing support. So thank you all once again. Cheers Rob

Facing the camera or facing the "frame" and looking into the frame?...you certainly got the latter if not the former and left room to move...The spacing is wonderful as Dione Giorio said, great use of negative space...which isn't really so negative with all those lovely clouds. Brilliantly exposed as well.

@granagringa That's all so positive - thank you so much Madelaine! I think it was supposed to be moving towards the camera - some of the weekly themes in this 52week challenge are quite specific. It's a good learning project though. Cheers Rob

@robz I think I'll have to check out the 52-week challenge...haven't had a go at that yet. But it's so inspiring to see your growth!!!
April 17th, 2018
@granagringa Thanks Madelaine - it's so good to know you can see a change! The 52 week challenge seems to be the ultimate challenge - it makes you try something new each week eg this week is different lighting in portraits!!! I basically never attempt portraits........ cheers Rob
