Was it worth it? by robz

Was it worth it?

Who knows! This took hours of frustration with the new Elements editing program. It started as 7 images of our rock (with Zoe) that I wanted to try as a panorama. That bit was pretty easy but the result was very ordinary and our gorgeous Zoe looked really bad. So the reflection effect put up it's hand and the panorama looked better with a lake at the front. Then the dreaded layers seemed to be needed to replace the old Zoe with a nicer Zoe and her reflection. Sounds easy - but this little duck found it very hard - even with the help of several videos. Multiple notes will hopefully help some of this new info still make sense tomorrow!!
I admire your processing dedication!! Well done, love this!!

Well that was very clever of you! The reflection works wonderfully:) Did you know you can also take a pano of the skyline and let Elements stack it for you, do one of the land and then let Elements stack the two together so you get a much deeper end result ... I can tell I'm soon going to be trying to teach you to suck eggs here and you're going to be telling me what to do!!

@fbailey Hi FB - you are too kind with your lovely comments. This is going to take a long while to become second nature - but it is fascinating. I read once before that you commented that Elements would do a vertical stitch. I didn't realize you made two panoramas and then put them together. I tried doing it all in one go with many photos showing ground level and sky level photos. - it stitched one of the sky shots to one of the ground shots by turning the sky upside down and then putting the trees together!! It was pretty weird - funny actually. What you have said makes much more sense - of course!! Thanks for mentioning it - I'll have another go. Cheers Rob

@golftragic Aww - thanks Marnie. There was much swearing along the way - but a definite feeling of elation when it finally did what I wanted!!

@robz I did a pano recently of Deal Castle and Elements 'forgot' the middle section, looked most odd. I have managed to do mini panos horizontally and then stitch them together successfully if that helps:)

@fbailey Funny how it sometimes has it's own little agenda!! But that sounds like a good tip! That's two things to try! Could I ask you another question? - I just spent ages trying to find out how to form a shadow on a cutout image - still haven't discovered it and none of the online videos mention it either. The nearest thing was the Bevels option in the Layers mode but it wasn't actually much good. Do you know off hand if there is such a thing - there was a really easy process on my old program so I'm guessing there is one here somewhere? Don't waste any time on it though - it is just something annoying at the moment!! And maybe Gavin Hoey will have something - I haven't tried him yet..... Thanks for all of your suggestions - I really do appreciate them!! Cheers Rob

I give you a tremendous amount of credit for feeling your way through this program. That's what I do a lot too, but I'm not using Elements. I think you just have to give yourself time and lots of playing and experimenting, but I think you'll get it. The result here is not bad so keep it up!

@robz I know exactly what you mean Rob!!!

@robz I can't remember off the top of my head Rob but if you Google 'how do I create shadows using Elements' it should give you instructions. For instance if you want to make a shadow of say a person I think you copy the layer to be on safe side, draw round the subject with the magnetic lasso tool and then go to Effects or Layer Styles on rhs. You should be able to then play with opacity slider and Ctrl T to Free Transform. Can't properly remember so will Google it later to see if I've given you right information. You could always Google YouTube video making shadows in Elements. Good luck! What do you think of Elements so far?

@shutterbug49 Thanks Shutterbug - I really like the 365 project because so many people are so generous with their ideas - as you can see from the replies to this post. It would be nice if any of this was a help to you. Cheers Rob

My iPhone has pano mode. I went to the volleyball nets at the park and had my hubby get in position to serve the ball and then had him run behind me as I slowly panned to where he ended up. It looks like he is on both sides of the net at once. Takes a little pre-planning to mark beginning and end points.
