Central to our town. by robz

Central to our town.

My Get-Pushed partner Joan @joansmor asked me to take an ionic photo of The Granite Belt. Stanthorpe is the main town in the Granite Belt and it is beautifully positioned along the banks of Quart Pot Creek. It is also one of the highest towns in Qld and has very cold (for OZ!) temperatures in winter. This allows our area to be a prime wine growing region. So, if you tempt tourists with wine and fire places in winter you will have a fine influx of people. And they all want to know how cold it is!! Hence - here is one of our new iconic structures - a giant (granite - of course) thermometer. And it follows on a long aussie tradition of "big things" - big cow, big apple, big crab, big pineapple, big banana, big oyster! (not very picturesque that one!), even a big mower!
This is intriguing for the sculpture, as well as the tonal range, from the grays through the color tones.

Fabulous answer to my challenge. I will do mine this weekend I am combining it with something I need to do for my scrapbooking.

I like how you combined the colour tones from b&w to colour. Beautiful capture. That thermometer looks really big.

Love the way you combined b&w and colour!

How good is this. I didn't know there was a big thermometer, we do love our 'big things' don't we. I posted the big banana and big merino recently, maybe I will get up to Stanthorpe one day and take a photo of this too.

Impressive thermometer! I like the design; a combo of original and modern.

Love the way you've processed this shot Rob. Terrific thermometer!!

@golftragic Thanks Marnie - I can't do this on my old program but PicMonkey does it so easily - as I just found out. I quite like it too. Cheers.

@lyndemc Hi Denise - thanks for your comment - the thermometer is pretty cool - and that big circle at the bottom is well designed to allow tourist photos - an adult can sit in it and pose quite nicely.. Cheers Rob

@onewing Lol - Hi Babs - thanks for your comment and the follow - I'll follow you back with pleasure. It's always so nice to see good images of our wonderful country. The "big thing" concept is sometimes so amusing - they can be so good - or sooo very bad eg The Oyster!!!

@jacqbb Thanks Jacqueline - I just discovered you could do this on PicMonkey!! I quite like it too. Cheers Rob

@sangwann Thanks Dione. Yes - our new thermometer is quite popular. And apparently Pic Monkey lets you do this type of combo - I quite liked it too. Cheers Rob

@joansmor Hi Joan - I'm pleased you like it - I had a bit of trouble deciding on the subject - we have lots of big iconic granite rocks up here as well - but the thermometer won out. I'll look forward to seeing yours. Cheers Rob

@taffy Hi Taffy - It is a pretty cool thermometer - we have quite an arty little community so it was never going to be too awful ( some "big things" are truly awful!!) I found out that PicMonkey does this tonal split - I quite liked it too. Cheers Rob

I'm looking at this with a bit of back lighting from my sunny dining room... so its hard to be sure.. have you split the image with colour and black and white? if so very clever

@brigette Hi Brigette . Yes, it's got a graduation from b&w to colour. I only just found out that Pic Monkey can let you do this - after you've posted your image. I really quite liked it! Cheers Rob

Nice processing with the black and white/colour.

@overalvandaan Thanks Saxa - I just discovered that PicMonkey could do this after you have uploaded your photo. I quite liked it too. Cheers Rob

Great combination of b&w/colour - looks like one of those "then and now" shots :)

I didn't see the graduation from B&W at first! How observant! This is interesting information.

@rosie00 Hi Lesley. It is interesting what you can do with the online Pic Monkey - all quite good fun actually. :)

@4rky Lol 4rky - I hadn't thought of that - but it's quite true. I quite liked the effect and it was very easy to do on PicMonkey. Will have to remember it! (that's the hard part!) :)
March 11th, 2019
@robz I have used Picmonkey for the occasional tweak but didn't realise this sort of effect is possible. I will have to investigate and experiment a bit more!

Like the transition from b&w to colour, very subtly done
March 12th, 2019
@fbailey Hi FB - I'm afraid i can't take much credit for the effect ( I quite liked it too) - it was very easily done on Picmonkey after posting the photo. Thanks for your comment. :)

Lucky I keep a F/C thermometer in my living room, so I can easily translate the temps without using math. That's not a bad temp at all.
March 17th, 2019
@stephomy Hi Stephomy - our climate here is pretty good - it usually ranges between about -5 in winter to about 30 in summer. Although it has been getting hotter the last few years.....
