Many large trees were very badly damaged during the very hot fire in the Girraween N.P. Rangers had to drop several of them before the walking tracks could be re-opened.
I like this picture, the two big yellow chopped trunks in the forefront, and the burnt colours in the background. And the green ferns starting to come back. It tells the story of the fire better than a long explanation..
@peadar Hi Peter - don't they make great patterns. This only shows the very large cracked ones - this tree would have probably been around 80 odd years old - so 80 small rings in total. :)
@koalagardens Slowly, slowly up here - it's so cold for part of the year that things don't decay very quickly. And unfortunately they cut it into sections only about 18in long - not too much use as a house....
@fbailey I'm guessing about 80 odd years. It was such a hot fire that even many of the old, big trees were badly damaged. But some that you think would be dead are actually shooting! Time will tell... :)
@olivetreeann You are so right Ann - there are a lot of people here who do wood turning and make some great stuff - but because this is in a N.P. it cannot be removed! :)
@casablanca All so true Casablanca - if it wasn't in the N.P. - they always leave the fallen timber to break down and recycle. All those black trunks made it quite eerie to walk through. :)
@etienne Hi Etienne - I was surprised there were not a few more people there. We walked for 1.5 hours and saw nobody - and yet it has so many photographic opportunities. :)
