Every town has something....

Driving through outback Australia is fascinating. Small towns where you wonder why anybody would want to live there. But, many have an amazing history and nearly all have something that draws their inhabitants together.
Augathella had the Meat Ants!
Bleugh!!! But how interesting

LOL Jackie, the big ant on his power pole was pretty cool - and I loved the WarCry for the Augathella Meat Ants Rugby League team...

Nice capture of that ant on the pole and I like the way you set this up.

So interesting! I love the Aussie ants - much bigger than ours here in NZ and much easier to photograph!

they are really something else!

What a wonderful find and great shots, what a fun place that must be ;-)

I love 365 for learning new things. If I need to dispose of a body I need to find a meat ant nest and worry about the bones later.

@wakelys Haha - Susan - I hope I'm never called upon as a witness to your plot!!! :)

@onewing Hi Babs - we just had to leave the highway and drive into Augathella - they had a highway sign - the "Home of the MeatAts" !!!

Ah yuck, glad we haven't come across them yet!

Ewwwwwwwwwww

Very interesting. I wouldn't want one of them crawling on my arms or legs in case they decide they are hungry.

An unusual sight for sure :-) Nice capture

Interesting! I am sure they have a purpose, but they sound a bit scary!

@ludwigsdiana Hi Diana - it's a funny place - a fairly long way from another town and not terribly big - but obviously footy has been a mainstay for a long time. They must travel quite a distance for each game.. :)

@pusspup Hi Wylie - they're not as gory as they sound. We have lots at Stanthorpe - they build those big, active, gravelly spread-out mounds you often see - and they don't sting - just bite you!! :)

Hi Dione and Pam - they do bite (don't actually sting though) - and they work as a big pack to actually eat a carcass. :) They're pretty interesting to watch...
